ha thanks steve, glad i missed that one by just a few min, lol yes the 86 yamaha is still in many many parts in the garage

unfortunately im not sure of the hours, this bike was bought by my uncle used, and he gave it to me to use after a surgery that made him unable to ride for a while. As for my skill level, i just leveled up with what i have done so far lol so i think itll be going to a shop

this may be a dumb question but ill ask anyhow, do i need to button it all back up and then take it to the shop? or can i take it how it is and give them the parts (they are all neatly laid out and labeled) and let them deal with it?

Maybe just put it back together and tell them exactly what you took off so they know.

nope didnt notice anything, just started to bog down, bike slowed, and then bam it died, from the time it started to get bogged down to when the engine quit was about 3 seconds, and before that it was running like a champ

You could just pull the cylinder off now & leave the rod & piston on & see what the rings look like..You can remove the piston at the rist pin..after you get the cylinder off..Its ussally in the top end but not allways..If the problem is in the bottom end its shop time ....

Are you absolutely sure of your gas/oil mix?.........You didnt get distracted by a bikini while mixing your oil?.........That symptom sounds like lack of lube or cooling. is it liquid or air cooled?

100% sure i got the mix right, its liquid cooled and it was full when i went out and when i opened it up today

but i think im gunna button it up and take it to a shop, enough tinkering for me today, and its not even my bike technically, so id hate to get to some point and get screwed, so sorry to say this but its shop time

I do not want to cause you more grief, button it up as best you can and take it to a bike shop, that looks like its, to use automotive terminology, "in the bottom end of the motor" I do not feel comfortable telling you to go further at this point.

ok well i took it to the shop, they told me $1500, based on what i told them i was the unlucky person to be on it after it had been on its way out for "quite a while" is the term the tech used, he said based on the looks of the bike its not worth that much to begin with...now i have 2 non working yamahas...sweet

dave, dont worry you caused me no grief, i was gald that i took it apart, because the tech literally told me he could open it up and charge me but it wont be worth my time and money, so im glad you guys could get me to open it up, thanks guys!

another one bites the dust!

How many hours on it?...........I worked on a straight 6 Mercury 2 stroke 150hp outboard that was 32 years old and looked like new inside 100s of hours too.....Did they give you any concrete cause for the "on its way out" condition?.....Do the work yourself, gain the know how from it, and get it back on the road, cheaper than a new unit!

i have no clue how many hours on it, i have put about...10-15 hours on it maybe? and i have no idea how many hours were on it when my uncle bought it and how many he put on it, there is no hour meter on it, no gauges of any kind actually.

the tech told me that based on the massive amount of oil leaking out of the exhaust pipe and what i told him about what happened it was gunna cost big money. Im glad he was honest and told me up front instead of later.

yeah lew now that i know its really busted ill do the work on it. Only thing is, since it is my uncles bike idk if he is going to want me to just buy it out from under him, and pay him like 1000 for it or if he is going to want the bike back and like another 600 bucks for parts or whatever since he could prolly fix it too. So i called him and will see what he wants, if he lets me keep it, then i will fix it and get rid of my 1986 yamaha thats in parts in the garage.

OK, I am getting to be an old fart, but take this piece of advise for the future......ALWAYS install a hour meter on a 2 stroke engine, its your odometer and service reminder. It will keep you thinking about things that otherwise might slip your mind. Alot of kids have the, "run it till it blows" mentality......Thats expensive, be smarter than the pack.....GOOD LUCK, and feel free to ask questions from us old farts!

ha thanks dave, i have only taken this bike out a hand full of times, and i certainly didnt want to ruin the bike. but if i do end up paying my uncle for it and keeping it, ill put an hour meter on it and take much better care of it.

But right now im going to go out back and start re-tearing it down to see if i can see what is going on in there
