i put a new intake gasket on my 78 f-100, so i deside to go ahead and put some new valve cover gaskets on as well...as im scraping the heads for the new valve cover i notice stamped in the head 4.2L but every thing elce is obviousely a 302 the intake has a date on it of (10/21/81//1)...the timing chain cover, exaust manifolds, everything apeers to be a 302. but my biggest thing is that a 302 is a 5.0 not a 4.2, so what kind of heads are on it? a friend of mine who is much older than my self says it has 289 heads and intake on a 302 block, but didnt they stop making the 289 before 81 or did they make them later than the 70s? can any body give me some info on this?..oh and i have pics of the intake after i cleaned it up with degreaser and a toothbrush...(its shaped strange to me for what i thought it was)....i need to know what kind of engine or engine combo i am having to deal with....thanks for any info you can give and i dont know how to post pics on here yet but if you will leave me an e-mail addy i can try to email them to you..
4.2 liters is a little over 256 cubic inches, so a 289 is out of the question, but there is a short-lived 255 in the Windsor family. It was its own engine and was in Fox body cars in 1980 or so. I am not sure what parts interchange, but I do know it's very similar to a 302. The 255 was a short-lived, poorly received engine and was never installed in trucks. If you don't find any more information here, I'd ask around in the 302/351W forum.
its not the original engine for the truck, i new that when i bought the truck because i could tell from the water neck that it had to be out of a car or something....so my big ? is what is it? and how do i post pics so i can put them on here so you may be able to tell me exactly what it is?
To post pictures, you have to upload them somewhere; there are free imagine hosting sites like ImageShack or you can get a Photo Bucket account. Then you paste the URL of the image into your post and put [IMG] and [/IMG] tags around it. I know ImageShack gives you the code to paste directly.
What I'm saying is though, once you do figure out how to post them, I'd post them in the 302/351W forum because I know a lot of guys over there that are very sharp, and this is really specific to the engine family and not the truck series, especially since your motor didn't come out of this series of trucks to begin with (you said it's from a car). You will get better information there. Here's the link:
