The last time I filled up, I put a bit more in with the nozzle running at low speed. The vehicle tank overflowed somehow and left a small puddle on the ground. I had the nozzle all the way in and the shutoff sensor didn't trip.
The fuel ran down the inside of the rear fender. I don't remember seeing any at the filler neck. Where did the excess come out?
the filler neck "might" be rusted thru or the clamp on the filler neck hose needs to be tightened. same thing happened to me and there was a small hole rusted thru
On the 09, the filler pipe is one piece and the clamp is down above the frame. A loose clamp would leak any time the tank is mostly full and sloshing.
I think I've got it figured out. I took a flashlight and shone it at the filler neck while looking inside the fender. I could see the light faintly passing through the gap between the filler neck pot and the fender sheetmetal. The gas must have come up the filler neck and flowed below the handle into the pot (I wouldn't have seen it below the pump handle). The gap allowed it to go down inside the fender.
The vent tube is so tiny it can't flow anything but air, so any excess fuel will come out the filler neck right away. I usually take out the filler neck and remove the restrictor so the nozzle can reach in farther. This also allows me to see if the fuel level is high while finishing off a fill.
I had thought that I would put a small hose on if there was a port or nipple of some type. This is not possible since the design uses a gap in the sheetmetal parts.
sorry, i didn't even look at your make and model. i'm used to being in the 1999 section. just assumed thats what you were driving. i'm sure you have no rust also. good luck
