Hi all, I tested my alt tonight and it is only pushing out 12 volts when the truck is running with no acc or lights on. So I need to replace my Alt. I have a 110 amp single setup. So dealer gets $230.00 with core change. Now my question is to remove the belt i need to move the pully but does it take a socket head or just a drive extension with a breaker bar to push it down and how hard it it to push down and slip off the belt at the same time. I hope to do it in the dealer parking lot so i can give them the old one right there. Also the new one (ford)has the pully on the alt right? thanks Jeff
1/2 breaker bar...no extension...just the drive itself. IIRC pull toward yourself if youre on the passenger side and just slide the belt off one of the pulleys and release and you can go to work on the alternator. Alternator should come with the pulley on it already from dealer.
You can buy them all day long on Ebay for 1/2 that price.
1/2 breaker bar in the slot on the tensioner (passenger side of motor) to remove belt. 3 bolts and one small nut to pull the alt out. Takes 20 minutes on the side of the road with crappy tools... ask me how I know this
I just did this the other day. Got my fingers stuck under the regular 1/2" ratchet and the water pump pully. I was to lazy to get the 1/2" drive breaker bar. (or rather look for it).
So laying on the radiator reaching in. Pull up with left hand and slip belt off of alternator with right.. Don't get you fingers under it when you go back down. That spring it tough.
And make sure you have the belt diagram someplace on your radiator support deck so you don't have to hassle with guessing if the belts gets jumbled. You can do it in the parking lot. No problem if you have 1/2" drive breaker bar.
I would never pay 220 for an alternator. I would shop around for sure.
I looked at the DB website, I never heard of them are they good or at least as good as Ford parts would be? I dont want to be replaceing it again within a year. thanks Jeff

As good, if not better from what I've heard of their products.
I think i paid around $160 after i brought my core back to kraegen and we fixed mine in the school parking lot just gotta be able to slip the new one on and kinda pry it so you can put the bolts through.
I don't have an alternator, but I've got the high torque starter waiting in the garage to go in. I've read nothing but great things about them and their starters and alternators from people here...
I just went through their search engine looking for an alternator for my 99 F150 XLT, I could not find one. I figured it would be pretty common, I emailed them but have not heard anything back yet.
