05-07 headlight conversion electrical question

Well the headlights I bought were a plug and play kit from ebay, it has the adapter pig tails, the no splice kit. I am still confused as to whether **or** not I need any relay harness''''s.....The DFuser website lists TWO different harnesses that it says are required for 05 headlight conversion, yet I have never heard of anyone adding relay harnesses. I have only ever heard people say, cut header panel, and add new bulb sockets. I stumbled across this relay harness issue while looking for pictures of what needs trimming. See here in this link: http://dfuser.com/catalog/harness.php It says two separate harnesses ARE REQUIRED for 05 headlight conversion. In the "Note" section on the link I provided, it states that "9007/8 and H4/9008 Conversion Harness is required for upgrading to the 2005-2007 Headlights". Now when you go down to the order form below that, it shows the 9007/8 and H4/9008 are separate harnesses totaling 150 dollars. Is one harness for headlight bulbs, and one for turn signals, im just lost. I want to either run a plug/play HID kit, or silverstar ultras for headlights. By the way itd be HIDs in headlights only, not fogs. Thank you very much.

If your new lamps have adaptors that plug into the truck as it is now then that is all you need. The relay harness's are to prevent voltage drop that you see in factory wiring which should give you slightly brighter lights.

So my lights might be a tad dimmer if I run just my adapter sockets/pigtails? If I run a relay harness WITH above setup, my lights will be a tad brighter? Thank you.

If I add a plug/play HID kit to JUST the headlights, would I need a relay harness? I am hearing HIDs draw straight from battery, so I would gain that voltage drop back from what was lost due to that adapter plug for the newer style bulb, thus NOT NEEDING a relaying harness. Basically the HID setup would gain that voltage since it would be connected to the battery some how. Am I correct? If I decide to use a relay harness, which exact one do I need off the DFuser site? It makes it sound as if there are two separate relay harnesses for the o05 conversion. Thanks again.

Well as it happens I have both the harness and Hid's. I installed the harness long ago, before the 05 lights or Hid's. If I were to do it again, I would just do the Hid's and no harness. The Hid kits do NOT connect to the battery, the ballast has a plug the same as the oem bulb, so it just plugs in to the stock harness. I also have Hid's in the fogs without a harness and they work fine. I have not actually measured but I am under the impression that Hids draw a lot of power when first turned on then settle down to below what the standard bulbs would draw. I could be wrong about this but I seem the remember reading this some where.

Sorry to hijack a little here... I posted on the Excursion board a few weeks back about putting HID bulbs in the factory fogs but got no real response - so now I'm happy to hear that it has been done, and works. Did you just use the 9005 bulb HID kit? my main question was the fog light deep enough for the HID - thought the bulb might be too long.

Yes I did use the 9005 kit, it fit with no problem at all. I am more worried about heat damage over time but no problems so far.

glad to hear it - I'll add this to my list of future mods! were you able to tuck the ballast out of harms way then?

Hey blowhole, what's the Z-Plate in your Zoodad opening? Is that something custom that you did? That's pretty cool.
