I finally got a chance to do my CCV mod and unfortunately had to replace the main elbow feeding the turbo, the silicone hose right off of the turbo and the black one feeding the intake manifold...ALL ruined from oil.
I did remove the intake elbow and discovered I indeed do have the "butterfly" in the intake elbow of my 2004 PSD with build date of 11/03
What is the purpose of this thing?
What does it do?
Is it helping me or hurting performance? If so, is it removeable without messing things up?

Someone more knowledgeable will be able to give you a for sure answer but i think its stagnant....I dont think they programmed any functionality for that part...If you look in the 6.0L bible i think it gives a good explaination there.
I believe on 03 it functioned with the EGR valve...it blocked flow of air when EGR allowed exhaust gas into the intake. But I believe its function was stopped through programming on the 04's. I as well as others have removed the "disc" part in an attempt to get a little bit more flow which alleviated some symptoms of PMS....Powerstroke Modification Syndrome....he he he
I have no problems will look around some more. There are more posts with smarter people than me repling to the same subject. I will see what I can find.

Were you able to buy a new black boot that connects to the elbow at the intake? I just noticed that mine is leaking pretty bad. Thanks.
yes i did. The main elbow to the compressor wheel (cold side) was 58.00, the blue off the other side of the turbo was 24.00 and the black that connects the elbow to the intercooler tube off the front of the manifold was 54.00?!?!?!?!? Makes no sense why the one on the front cost as much as the 4" hard elbow that feeds the turbo....but there you have it....I took it in the shorts on that one.
