I bought a '07 F150 that the previous owner didn't have mudflaps on so there are alot of paint missing off the bottom of the cab and on box corners ect. Most of the bare spots were clean, either bare clean metal or primer but no paint, and a few of the spots had some surface rust. I took my dremel with a wire wheel and went over all the spots that were down to the bare metal to remove the surface rust and shine the metal up, then I primed then painted the metal with the small bottles of touch up paint. My question is, how long do I have to let the paint cure before I can cover it with some 3M protective film to prevent future chips . the temp around here has been jumping around from 35-50F and I did heat the metal up good before applying the primer to try to get it to cure faster. Also, is there some type of spray on rubberized coating that might work better than the 3M tape, the bottom of the cab all ready has a rubber coating over the paint and seems to work pretty well, except for the spots that catch the heavyest rock spray. Thanks for any info.
I wouldn't think a primer needed more than a day to cure enough to coat over it. Primers have an adhesive quality so the paint will stick to it, I don't think they should dry smooth .
For undercoats there are a lot of option. I prefer the HD rubberized undercoatings, mostly because they that months to dry up if they ever do. While they are still rubbery, when you scratch or chip them, it oozes back over the scrape. The hardening kind will chip and flake off, so they take a little more prep work. I've used 3m and Permatex's HD and I think I still prefer Permatex.
