Question about engine swap
opposite way. We would like to take out the 390 and go with a 300 6.
Would we have to change any mounting brackets or anything like that.
Basicly how much work is involved. My boyfriend would also like to put a
4spd in it cause he hates driving automatics.
We like the truck but as a young family the fuel cost is hurting us but I don't
want to part with it cause it would be hard to find another in this shape plus
we know where to get a good 300 6 and a 4speed for it for a decent price.
300 I-6. :/
The "perches" are the same between those two engines, but the rubber
mounts are different. The bell housing patterns are different too.
To switch to manual you'll need a pedal cluster assembly for inside the cab
and a clutch crank assembly that fits between the frame and the new bell
housing. You'll need a flywheel for the engine. The drive shaft situation is
different, manual transmissions have an external slip joint.
I see this stuff over and over here. :/ At least this time you are wanting to
switch to manual! LOL :) The trick is to buy a pickup like you want and swap
parts around and sell the pickup with the automatic.
If you've got a parts truck and are ready to go for it, it can be done. :)
You -can- do it. Betcha it'd be cheaper to buy one like you want tho! ;)

ps- When all else is equal, pickups with automatics are cheaper to buy
because there are more of them and those wanting manuals will pay
more to get a manual. My usual argument don't fit here. ;)
pps- where you at? I have some of the parts you need and want a 390.

Here is a pic of our truck:
The reason we want to swap to the 300 6 with a 4spd is because we borrowed this truck once and it was alot better on fuel.

Although we may just be better off to buy the truck above if we can. Plus it's a 4x4 but it's also a shortbox and a bit on the highside for a 4 year to get in and out of lol.

One of the main things threads about gas mileage need to have in them
is someone going off about how the person complaining needs to do a
thorough job on a tune up. LOL :)
Carburetor and choke adjustment and rebuild included.
Hardly ever does "main jet sizing" get mentioned either.
What's your tune up situation? :)
I like to check my ignition wires using an ohm meter.

What a guy needs to do to fully realize what the gain really is tho, is to figure
out using math and a road test (both) how far off the odometer is and figure
that difference in every time. It adds to the gas mielage when going to larger
tires and reduces the number when going to smaller than "stock" tires.
For years and years I was adding 12.8% because of my 235/85-16's up from
the original sorry little H78-15's. Since I changed the gears to 3.50 from 3.25
it's now only 4.7% difference.
Slide rules rule(!) in figuring proportion problems, if you got one, try it out. ;)
