Hey all, I just aquired my first tandom camper trailer. Id say it tops the scales around 6000 lbs ( (4) 5 lug tires on trailer) The trailer has 4 drum brakes on it with electric controllers. I made it home fine with my 06 250 SD as far as as stoppng went but it is the law that those brakes be working plus I dont feel 100% just using the trucks disks to stop that if I ever need to slow down in a hurry.
The ford built in trailer brake control I can get in a kit but it will set me back over $600 from what I have seen but it is a real nice system
What do you guys have good luck with for aftermarket controllers. Is it that big of a deal which one i get? Also my truck has the factory 7 pin hook up and from what I learned the wire for the brakes has been factory installed and is lead to the cab under the dash some where. can any one elaborate? will the brake controller come ready so I can just plug it in and go?
Take a look at the Tekonsha P3. I've been using it in my truck for around 2 years now. Its a step up from the Prodigy and has more features and is still easy to use. I've used the Prodigy and the P3 and the P3 is better IMO. Get the wiring harness for the controller thats premade. It costs like $10 and makes installation a breeze. Just mount the controller and plug in the harness and your set.
