ive got a 2004 250 with the 2v 5.4 has approx 65k miles on her. ive noticed quite a loud ticking coming from the lower end of the engine. ive isolated it to where the trans connects to the crankshaft. it increases as rpms go up, not in noise just follows the rpms. im thinking that it all begun when i changed from penzoil full synthetic back to motorcraft syn blend. ?? any idears?
Are you sure it's not the Y-pipe? They put a new one on in 2000 or 2001, but mine flutters decently. A can of seafoam makes the noise worse, I think it breaks up some deposits that changes how the air flows.
You may want to look at your oil (either the dip stick or a short drain into a clean container) see if there are particles or crude that shouldn't be there.
i don't know about the oil change, but if you isolated it to the crankshaft you might want to do a visual check on your flywheel for cracks or torque converter bolts(if its an auto) for being loose.
oils looked good i do all my own changes around 4k. i think that one of the studs is broken on the rear right manifold but i didnt think it would make that kinda sound in that area. maybe i should pull the inspection plate and peek after all.?
Mine started making a ticking sound that sounded like an exhaust manifold leak so i wasnt too worried.......but.........turned out to be one of my spark plugs blowing out of the head. I would definaltely recommend checking your plugs asap. Mine sounded like that for about 2 days up until mine blew out. Just from my experience.
well all checked out on the tc and the flywheel no cracks, no loose bolts. this is really starting to get to me! if it wasnt worth less than what i owe id trade the damn thing in!!! somebody help or to the stealer we go!
Did you replace the broken exhaust manifold stud (maybe gasket too) and check your spark plugs as recommended? If not, then I would start there before going to the dealership.
I've had mine in 3 different shops including the local dealership. 2 of the 3 couldn't find anything wrong. 1 said I have metal shavings in the oil and needed a motor. I now have it at another shop and haven't heard anything yet. When I dropped it off he said it sounded like an exhaust leak. Good luck. Please update when you find out anything.
my 04 was doing the same thing but i thought it was a blown header gasket turned out that the two bolts that hold the header to the y-pipe were a little loose. not enough to see carbon or black soot coming out but just enough to hear the ticking sound. tightened them up and the noise went away.
