can i run the 5-0 HO headers w/ AOD tranny on a 53 F100 with all the linkage from original manual tranny still in the way. and can i run a stock starter on it?
I had the same set up in the 53 f100 I bought last May. Somebody stuck a 5.0 with AOD tranny from an 87 T-Bird in it. I'm not sure where the motor mounts came from, but there was clearance issues with the motor mounts and I saw no way that it would clear the steering/brake/transmission mess located in the lower driver's side firewall area. I'm wanting to go with smaller motor mounts, and ditch the shift linkages. My general impression is/was that you'd need block-hugger headers that would drop straight doun between the center spark plugs and then make a 90 degree out the back. I'm stalling on making a decision on all of this until I can see other trucks that have working combinations. I see no hope in using the stock headers.
I have sandersons on my coupe and they are pricey so was concerned about quality with the summit brand. They fit and look nearly identical to sanderson for one third the price. Nice heavy flat mounting flange fit very nice. Came with gaskets, reducers and bolts. Have to use a mini starter but same with sanderson. At $100 I would buy them again.
I dont know what carnut is using for motor mounts. But, I was at the shop today and one of my exhaust ports comes out rite above the little beam going between my motor mounts, dont know what you call it. the block huggers look symetrical front to back and that would cause interference. cant use shorties or stock cause of brake/clutch linkage. so that means new motor mounts, yea? what kind ? 302 into a fifty three F100
Block huggers look to be center dump until you fit to the engine. They actually dump just to the rear of the stock rubber motor mount. I'm using the stock rubber mounts mounted to modified chassis engineering frame brackets that bolt to the frame.
I'm suspecting that my motor mounts are from the 87 T-bird that the motor came out of. They are VERY big! Surely I can find smaller to reduce the chance of exhaust interference??? I'm hoping the start on the frame/bodywork as I'm off all next week. Gearhead, do you have a part # on those headers? Do they come in ceramic or stainless steel?
