power steering pump 73-79 questions

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew the differences between the highboy p/s pumps and the 78-79 pumps. The reason I ask is because the pump in my highboy is leaking a lot from the front somewhere looks like it could be the shaft? I have a perfect pump outta my 79 f350 and was sitting around wondering if it would work in my highboy. I know that a new pump is like 40 bucks, but I am on a limited budget and am trying to use what I have already to fix up the highboy. I have quite a few other things on this truck to replace that I am gonna have to pay for!! LOL Anyway, thats my question. Also, I have 2 2wd power steering gearboxes from a 79 f350, are they worth keeping around or should I scrap em, I am trying to lighten my collection of parts a little and most of the 2wd stuff I don't need and obviously shipping on something like that would be a bit pricey, anyway I just figured I would ask, I am gonna go and post an ad in the classifieds after this post is done and see what happeens.------Jack

The pump will work...The only problem you will run into is the fitting on the Metal pump is different than the plastic pump. You either would need to find an adapter or have the end changed at a hose place. The 2wd Boxes can be used to convert to integral power steering...at least that is the ones I use.

HB trucks had different engines, thus requireing different brackets. In theory, "power steering" was not available in a highboy, so the later integrated power steering was not even available.

True...It's considered "Power Assist" Steering....I have the original window sticker from my 73 Highboy with the option.

I guess if the truth be known that any power steering pump can be used. I have used the early pump with later integrated power steering stuff, and I have also used the later pump with hydro assist.
Guess it only matters if someone listens???????
Kind of like the "fallen tree in the woods".

My Uncle bought a 1977 F-150 4x4 shortbed 4 wheel drive brand new right of the lot in 77'. It came from the factory with the metal type pump and integral power steering. I think it was somewhere in 77' or early 78' when they switched to the plastic pump. My 78' runs the plastic pump. As far as I'm concerned...If it has Integral Power Steering I'm a happy camper.....Even if it has the typical "FORD" Whine..LOL
