How should I hook up engine for removal?

I need to know a secure way to chain the engine down when we hoist it out of the truck.

My friend with the hoist(and some experience, but not a ton)says to screw a couple head bolts in and chain it to them, but the engine seems way to heavy for a few puny bolts to hold the engine......I think theyd break and I really don't feel like droping the engine.

What way can I secure the chain(s) to the engine that would ensure safety(that is easily accessable)?

Thank you all very much.

you can lift the engine with manifold bolts so head bolts should do fine

yep, one head bolt from each side of engine works great, one in front and the other in rear so it's somewhat balanced (like sam mentions). here is the one I pulled yesterday.

But whatever bolts you use need to be tightened down. If you have the heads off, and stick two head bolts in with 4" of them swaying in the breeze, you'll snap off the bolts from the side load. You want to use bolts that are perfectly vertical, ideally. Believe it or not, the 5/16" carb bolts are plenty strong enough, as long as you have them tightened down onto a lifting plate, and lift straight up on them.

It would help a lot to know what engine you're pulling -- flat V8, flat 6, 302, 292 Y-block, etc.

What he said. I was skeptical but lifted my 351W and installed it just using the carb bolts and a lifting plate on an aluminum intake. Talk about pucker factor! But it worked great!

I like to use a short piece of angle iron that will drilled with TWO holes that will catch a couple of headbolts.

One side toward the front, one toward the rear.
Watch out for hooking the carb or fuelpump...slim

DenverSlim, I like the angle iron, plus it gets your chain farther away from the block which gives your carb more space between the chain

I used a carb plate when I had to pull the engine this last time for the rebuild.. engine AND tranny.. 460+accessories+C6 tranny. right at 1000lbs.

back hole on the carb plate gave perfect balance.

I have a carb lifting plate and I have done a 460 with a C6 attached to it. you wouldn't think it would be that strong I am a believer! You can get a lifting plate from most part stores for about 15 to 20 bucks. It is worth it's weight in gold.

you could just make a lifting plate to....get some sheet steel 1/4" plate should do it. Use a carb as a template drill holes and install a lifting point in the dead center of the plate (U bolt or similar) and viola........slot the holes and you can use the same plate for multiple applications.

I was gonna suggest that you hook it from the top though....lol
