I'm pretty sure that the 351M shares a bell housing pattery with 429/460. So if you do that swap, its just motor mounts, headers, etc. Anything else will require a new transmission if you have an automatic, or bell housing if you have a manual.
You can swap in about anything. If you choose something besides the 351M/400, or the 429/460 you will also have to change out the bell housing et all. That being said I would go for the 460 with or without one of the many stroker varients, plenty of power from idle on up.
What are you trying to do just put another 351m in or a 460? A 460 is worth the time to do the swap but you will need some hard to find parts or spend alot of money on L&L's web site. The 351m will just drop in though and if you have 4:11 gears it will do you fine but I would suggest going to a four barrel carb and intake it will be a big improvement but go with the edelbrock idle to 5500 intake, cam and carb kit because the 351m's don't like alot of rpm's. I have used this combo and it didn't even seem like the same engine.
To keep it simple I would go with a 400 ford but not a crate engine. Find someone that know how to build. 400 in stock form are turds compared to the potential these engines have within them. Its basically doing some good machine work and 375 hrsp is easy or more in stock form with 4 barrel intake and nice carb around 750cfm carb. Need to have heads with adjustable valvetrain. A good machine shop will know what to do. Or buy some new heads. Edelbrock makes a nice set or step up to CHI heads from austrailia. www.mpgheads.com or www.Jonkaaseracing.com. Now if you go nice crate engine ford 460 making 450hrsp or more you will have to change some things on truck. Drivelines will twist off if you hook up hard personel experience and yoke upgrades and u-joint stuff. Also flywheel with 12" clutch for the np435. I broke 4 np435 split case. Automatic is the way to go to save the drivetrain. 4speeds are fun but hard on drivetrain. I've running a 460 with auto for about 15 yrs and don't work on it much. Its a 472 10 to 1 and nice heads and other stuff that your supposed to get when building a nice 460, This motor been in around 6 yrs. Ran a 429 for yrs and didn't quite have the low end I wanted. Also a 532 but it made gpm gallons per minute but the power was awesome. 460 is a good engine and will do pretty much anything you want it to do if geared decent and acouple of nice parts here and there. If your building a mud racer cubic in rules and when in doubt nitrous or blower or turbo's or what ever makes it go faster. You tube F2000 ford truck 1000hrspwr off road truck is a cool truck to check out if into desert racing, one of my favorites.
