Question deleting air conditioning...

I had a previous problem that I thought was the brake booster, but now I don't think so, I can hear a buzzing noise when the engine is running (like a bee hive) and was told it could be the brake booster. I started the truck and got out and listened to the booster with a stethescope and couldn't hear anything, but I could hear the noise. Now I'm pretty certain that its the ac compressor, and since I was planning on deleting the ac anyhow for the little more power it will give I just wonder how hard this will be? Can I still get the same result if I leave the compressor on and just run the smaller belt that doesn't include it?

You live in Michigan?

I wouldn't disable ac why YOU BE NEED THAT IN SUMMER.

I survive last summer in 79 F150 with no ac and turn on heater to keep engine from overheat. That was fun ride. Actual it WORST I have survive with heat blow at 150oF with my electric laser temperature.

Can you get video with sound.

It could be bearing dry. Check Alternator that most can make noise.

I wouldn't disable the AC. The defrost/defog won't work well at all either. Also, it won't give you any extra power by not having it. Well thats the case if the ac is turned off.

I never used the ac last year, that's why i thought it wouldn't be that big of a deal. the defroster not working would suck though. is there a way to lube the bearings on the ac compressor, or am i just waiting for it to die now? I guess it could be the alternator too but i'm almost positive its the ac. I'm not sure about video with sound, might be able to record the sound with my phone and send it that way?

If the noise is coming from the comp. and it is there even with the A/C off then it is most likely the free wheel bearing in the pulley. If you want to fix it the only way is to replace the pulley. However your demist will work, just not as fast first thing. If you can route a shorter belt and bypass the compressor and don`t mind not having ice cold air in the summer then go for it.

i was thinking I would try the shorter belt just to make sure the ac compressor is what is making the noise. its only about fifteen bucks so I figure I could do that in five min and find the problem. If its not the ac then i would guess its the alternator, but i really don't think that's it

well... i guess they don't make a shorter belt to bypass the ac, looked at a couple different web sites and couldn't find one, so my other option is replacing or fixing the ac compressor. I would assume that the noise would be the bearing in the compressor, anyone ever done this?? I'm trying to avoid having to spend two hundred on a new compressor...

changing the pulley isn't a big deal as long as you use the ac pulley puller, don't forget to remove the center bolt.. That way you don't have to recharge the system. By leaving the ac. on you keep the resale value of your truck up.

The belt is the same, wether you have AC or not. The compressor is replaced with a bracket and pulley. I had a pulley bearing go on me after the comp cooked itself, so I bolted the bracket and pulley on in place of the comp and drove it to the shop to have them install a new comp. I just tied the comp back with a rope, but didn't disconnect it. I let the shop re&re the charge.
The pulley is need to delete the compressor, because the belt path from the power steering pump to the idler will not clear the water pump.

My A/C pump fried on me one day on the way to work. After spending like an our in front of O'rieelys trying to find a belt that would fit by passing the pump. I found, there is no belt that would work. I ended up stay the bight at my bosses house. Luckly he lives only a few blocks from the store, I had to drive there without any belt on there. Someone told me the next day that O'rielly's sells a bypass pulley. It would have been awsome of the store would have told me that. Anyway, I digress, I went to another O'rielly's and bought the bypass pulley for about 20.00 and had it on in less than 10 minutes. I taped up the hoses with some window sealing tape that we use in installing windows at work. and then tied them out of the way with 12 guage wire.

My compressor froze up one day right in front of an auto parts store. How lucky was that??? It took a little time, but the store let me try different belts until I found a size that worked to by pass the compressor. Been running it for a few months now, with out any noticeable issue.

This store did not have a by pass pulley on their system, but I have seen them offered on some online parts places. I have every intention of rebuilding the entire AC system. I am not looking forward to a Texas summer without it.
