New Steering Box Cost

What is an average ocst I can expect to pay at at my Ford Dealersip for a nw steering box? Other than the drop pitman arm being defective, NOBOIDY can tell me any other rason why my steering is still LOOSE.

I don't mind spending $$ for a new steering box if it will help make my truck SAFE once again.

Thanks!

ps....Could it be possible that with the 6" BDS 4 link Suspension Lift i got that either the drop pitman arm is defective OR that the geometry of the drag link, sawy bar, etc is OFF and would cause loose steering??

i cant beleive ur willing to pay for a entire NEW steering box...

if i were u i'd go back to the place that installed/suplied ur lift kit, and tell em to make it steer rite or put ur truck back to stock..

theres no way with a simple lift of that size (not tiny, but hardly HUGE) that ur steering should be loose and be deemed acceptable..

nautraly Ford isnt on the hook as ur truck didnt have a problem before the lift, but something isnt rite, either the install bugered something up or one of the parts is BAD...

what did the place that did the work/supply the kit have to say ??? surely they cant expect u to be happy with loose steering on a brand new 40K$ truck...

There are a couple of different steering gear assemblies available, one for trucks built before 07/30/07 and one for after. This is for the part only...

built before 07/30/07 - MSRP is $519.09

built on or after 07/30/07 - MSRP is $558.79

I agree! I too don't believe that there is anything wrong with the steering box. From what the OP has stated, he immediately started experiencing loose steering after the lift kit was installed. There is the issue... the lift kit.

I don't want the shop that installed the lift to ever come within 10 feet of my truck much less alter or change anything on it. I can suck up the fact that you have to "pay to play" and take a risk whenever modifying a vehicle.

I may have over-dramatized the issue. The truck certainly is driveable and I drive it work 2 - 3 times a week. It just seems to me (with NO mechanical knowledge) thatthe steering should be tighter (as it was stock)

50% of poeple tell me to live with it as no matter what kit you get once you start messing with the geomtery of the steering, it will never be "perfect".

25% of people say that the drop pitman arm might be defective.

25% of people have told me that I am cazy and just need to ditch the truck in a lake and ride my bicycle!

FTE sponsor: FTEpartsguy's website has a EZ to use online parts catalog available to everyone with the MSRP & FTE member DISCOUNT prices listed.

The $519.09 gearbox would have a FTE member discount price of: $467.57.

I do not see this $519.09 gearbox listed for an 2005/2007 F250 Super Duty. I wish you had posted the part number.

I don't have a part catalog this new, but with the part number I can ID the box using another website.

The $558.79 gearbox has an FTE member discount price of $502.91.

However..Ford Motor Company only sells these gearboxes as EXCHANGE only, which means there is a $225.00 core charge, refundable only when the old gearbox is returned.

Your truck *does* look bada$$ .... my son is blacking-out our old '02. But, how a machine operates is more important than how it looks. At least, to me.

Is it a name brand "lift kit" that was installed? If so, talking to their tech dept could help.

Good luck.

The gear assembly (box) with the pre-07/30/07 and post-07/30/07 designation are for the F450 only and have a higher price.

Post-07/30/07:

The 2008 F250 F350 have a single gear assembly:

Ok, it's obvious that you've reached your limit with the original lift shop that did the install. Before you go spending $$$ on peripheral replacement parts, I would take a deep breath and do the following:

1. Check around to find the best lift shop in the area and have them look at your truck. They may not want to do it since they didn't do the lift install but maybe they will be sympathetic after you tell them what you've done so far to address the issue.

2. The lift shop may recommend that you replace the drop pitman arm since it seems to be questionable anyway (torque issues). In fact, I would go ahead and order a new one from BDS or ask them to replace the original one under warranty.

3. I would not replace any other parts on the truck that are not directly related to the lift kit installed. You've only had the lift kit installed for a few weeks and I just can't believe that any of the non-lift kit parts are already failing and need to be replaced.

If after you've done these recommended steps you still have issues, drop your truck off at my house and I'll provide you a state-of-the-art bicycle of your choice!

Been outside washing my truck this morning and am about to take pictures in a little while...

I been thinking (dangerous)...

1) I definitely am going to take a short trip to a reputable lift shop about 45 minutes away in the next week to get their opinion and advise.

2) COULD it be that the springs and shocks that came with the BDS system are just to soft and it's making me FEEL every little dip and imperfection in the road through my steering wheel even more???? Could it be fixed with tighter springs and shocks? I AM LEANING TOWARDS THIS SCHOOL OF THOUGHT.
