I have a 87 f350 with a 7.3
the other day the clutch stopped working
after a short look under the truck i found the bell housins broken where the clutch fork pivot is **#$#$@@&&
well what bell housings will bolt to this engine and trans i will probably get one from a salvage yard at the local u pullit that will be a long day
oh the trans is a four speed
thanks
4 speed manual makes it a T-19 transmission. Only another identical diesel transmission will have the correct bell housing.
The good news is that you can replace only the bell housing and not the whole transmission if you want. A 5 speed would have to be replaced completely.
Would be good to know what went wrong to break the bell in the first place. They don't usually break for no reason and the T-19 isn't a weak tranny.
I have to believe that the last owner drew the motor and bell housing together with the bolts when installing the motor and cracked it .
this truck had a 6.9 from what the vin tells me and the last owner put the 7.3 in it along with a few other mods there are a couple of cracks ending or starting around where the clutch arm grommet hole is in the bell housing. The tranny will pop out of 2nd gear once in a while on deceleration too. so i guess i will open that up to any suggestions??
Try to get a complete transmission. T19s are not worth much these days and you can get them for a decent price at wrecking yards. In reality it might even be easier to get a whole transmission than just the bell housing.
i wish junkyards were an option around here... the response i get when calling them is that the old ford diesels, when 1 part goes bad with the motor the whole motor will be junk within a few months. i almost had a dang fight with one owner over that b/c i told him what he was full of about these old motors... oops
Same thing happened to me. Hotrod stepson cracked it. Failed when I was using it of course. Got mine from the dealer. I don't think it was that expensive. This was 7 or 8 years ago.
I take that back. With the clutch, master - slave cylinder, transmission rebuild (not caused by that failure), tranny shop screw-ups, new throwout bearing explosion, back to the tranny shop, another shop screw-up, another master slave unit. In otherwords the truck was never the same again.
These are actually pretty common to crack under heavy load. 87 trucks came with a 5 spd, someone probably put that 4 spd in it. I would try to find a 5 spd to put back in it, you will increase your mileage a lot. You should be able to find a bell housing for this engine, You need one from behind a diesel, none other will fit.
