-take #1 and bring it up to the top......
-make sure its on compression by using pushrod to see which valve would be closed.......
-set rotor to wherever i want #1 to be at
-now do i start off with my timing marks at zero? and does all of this have to be perfect?
one more thing.....is this the cylinder layout of my engine

what direction will the dizzy turn?
Hey projectbad78, Take #1 plug out use a compression gauge adapter or your thump or finger over plug hole have someone bump key over in until compression pops your finger out. That's compression stroke look at balancer and see where tdc or 0 is and line it up on on the pointer on the timing cover. Drop dizzy in pointed at #1 on cap make sure dizzy goes all the way in might have to bump key over couple times to get it to seat. Then install wires.
It's not difficult, you'll just rotate the engine until the passenger side front cylinder (#1) is at TDC. Make sure the rotor is pointing at the #1 terminal on the distributor cap (there will be a marking on the cap for #1).
The rotor rotates counterclockwise and the firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Route the plugs wires to the cylinders (the plug wire from the terminal past #1 on the cap will go to the third cylinder on the passenger side, and so on).
