I have an 84 F-250 with a stock 460, I have a "ticking from the passenger side of the block, I have pulled the valve covers and noticed that I have 2 push rods that seem very loose, there are no adjustments, the rocker bolts are tight. To go along with this ticking I have noticed blue smoke coming out of the passenger side exhaust, and a fairly good puff at start up (valve seals ??) This truck had been sitting for a while before I bought it.
My questions are: Could lifters be causing most of these symptons? I realize I will be doing valve seals, but will I be doing lifters also? and if so, how far should I take this? push rods? cam? is it feasible to do just lifters?
I would never do just lifters. New lifters will not last long on an old cam.
Most likely you have some worn lobes on the cam. If it were me, I'd do cam, lifters, seals and a timing chain while you have it all apart.
Or, if it's still running well just leave it alone and live with the tick and light smoke. My 302 has been running like that for years. I'm not going to mess with it right now until I figure out what motor I'm going to build for my rig.
How long is awhile? I have heard that sticking lifters is caused when the oil wasnt changed when it should have been and the engine sits up. Is this right?
This is funny i just bought a 84 f-250 with the same problem.I will probley just put a new pushrod in and run it for awhile i heard of fords running like this damn near for ever. Was going to sell but wife likes it.
Good advice here, two things to add. An old trick with stuck lifters is to do an oil change and put in ATF, let in run for a while at a high idle till the tick goes away or I guess it decides it doesn't want to, maybe 15 min. And if you do decide to replace the lifters definitely do the cam and chain, and make sure to get a strait up chain yours is retarded from the factory, you'll get much more power out of it.
Thanks for the great feedback, the truck sat for about a year. I have changed the oil twice, once when I got it and once after the Seafoam, it seems it it started smoking worse after the Seafoam. Other than the light puffs of smoke and the ticking, the engine runs nice, pleanty of power and very smooth.
The best thing you can do is keep running it. You may have a stuck ring causing the smoke, and varnish in the lifters causing the ticking. I have also used Rislone in the oil with good results to get rid of ticking lifters, but don't expect it to go away instantly. I have had to run them several weeks before the ticking subsided a little bit.
I have never worried about ticking in my engines either, though it is nice if it goes away with the oil treatment. The smoking as suggested, won't hurt anything either unless it starts fouling the plugs out. If it starts fouling the plugs to were they won't fire, then you might have to do something about it.
