Hi All,
So I'm changing the oil today for the first time on my '05 F-350 6.0 and I'm having issues. I went to the dealer and got the Motocraft filter and I've been trying to follow the directions that are in the tech folder, but i've run into a few issues. I tried googling it, and looking here but no luck on my issue. (BTW the old filter that was in there wasnt Ford/OEM, no felt and it was completely open, top and bottom....) The directions say that the filter is supposed to "snap" into the cap, but I cannot get it to do that. Also when i'm trying to screw the cap back on i'm getting resistance, like spring resistance, I dont wanna bust something so i'm taking it slow and askin here. Guess I'll go do fuel filters while I wait..... Thanks!
It just says 25 Nm with an arrow.... Cant see much other than that, no part numbers or anyting... ?!?!? Maybe I'll run down to the junkyard real quick and see what they got? THey close soon, so I'm off! Back shortly! Thx
The Ford cap should have a small round cavity on the back side. The ford oil filter has three prongs on top that snap into this cavity. There is a spring inside the oil filter housing that should give you resistance when trying to screw on a new assembly. You just need to push down until you get it started.
Maybe the old filter had the 3 prongs on the top of it that snapped into the cap and that whole top came off the filter. It happened to me once after I got my oil changed at one of those quick oil change places, and why I change my oil (and everything else) myself now.
Bingo! DFLEX, you hit it on the nose. I just pulled my HFCM Filter, saw the hole that was supposed to be there. Came back into the garage, read your post, grabbed a screwdriver and i'll be darned if the plastic top to the old filter didnt just get stuck up in there..... Thanks so much for your help gentleman! I can finish this up now and not have to worry bout going to the dealer for a new cap tomorrow! hehe Again, thanks, you're a great bunch of guys/gals!
Its always nice when its a quick simple fix... I wasn't very patient the day that happened to me and I ended up breaking the three prongs off the new filter. At least I bought enough oil and filters for two oil changes (or so I thought lol) so I had a spare but it was still a waste of a filter.
Glad that the FTE community was able to help. We all learn from others sharing the gotchas. You know what they say, experience means having already made most of the mistakes.
Yea, I've made my share of the mistakes, or just staring at something on a rig for hours going "WTF, how is that supposed to work?" hehe Aside from the Oil Change my most recent experince was staring into the rear diff of my expy for like 4 hours wondering how to get the retaining pin out to remove the c-clips to pull the axles to change the seals.... (Figured out that if i just got a prybar and pried the axles outward the stupid pin just fell out.. doh! ) Anyways, thanks again for the help! I'll help out where I can, but for a while I think I'll be the guy just reading bout these trucks. (My first Superduty/Diesel engine) But I'll help out where I can!

Most of us were "that guy" at some point. I knew next to nothing when I bought my first diesel. This place is awesome!
