hey all I am currently building a 97 explorer for the bush. i want to run a 5.0 fuel injected engine. if i get a harness with all the useless stuff removed and just the basic needs can i wire that up and plug it into any 5.0 computer? or does the harness have to go with the computer from factory....
i'm not sure on this one but i just think it's funny you said your building an explorer for the bush....must be one hell of a bush to need an explorer to navigate it
The harness has to match the computer to a certain extent. You can't use a MAF harness with an Sd computer, or a manual harness with an automatic computer, or vise versa. Assuming you have a manual tranny in the Explorer you want a computer and engine harness off either an early 5.0 truck with a manual or AOD tranny, or a mustang with the same combo. The later trucks were primaraly autos and those were also computer controlled and that adds a lot of wiring, something I'm guessing you want to avoid.
If you get the engine from a wrecking yard, the computer and engine harness comes with it. That's pretty much standard procedure with buying the newer EFI engines.
Are you gonna body lift it? If not you MIGHT have to do some trans tunnel massaging. I'm not sure how much room the E40D equipped trucks have between the trans and tunnel. Or the size difference between it and the C6.
Thats only because of the chip. The Intercepter (police) chips are better than ones for the Mustang.
I have had a few 5.0 stangs over the years & live in fl where the fl st troopers used the ssp mustang. So there was a lot of them around. The only differences i know of was they had a 130 amp alt...160 speedo...stronger floor pans..& the cop stuff...They were all coupes...I have never heard of this chip ??? Tell me what the diff is...Lew
Its just a different calibration for fuel, timing, no speed limiter, ect. We have a stock SSP Mustang that runs from time to time at the local drag strip running in the 10's with slicks and flowmasters. Most Intercepters arent made to run red light to red light, they are purely chase (high speed pursuit) cars. The 130 amp alt is to power the computer, lights, sirens. The 160 mph speedometer isnt just for show either. Thats what i liked about living in Florida (Ocala), about all you saw on the interstate were SSP Mustangs.
What were you driving? He probably didnt know how to drive, and the 351 intercepter was a carburated engine last used in the mid 80's.
i was driving my truck, runs 14.4 in the 1/4, how can you mess up driving a stock interceptor? it was auto all you do is stall out the converter and launch it then keep it pinned the car does the rest....it looked to be a crown vic but it was rounded so i doubt it was from the 80s and it was definately efi and a 351 i looked under the hood....the kid tried to convince me it had twin turbos from the factory hahahahahaha it obviously did not but it did have intercepter badges on it
with just slicks and flowmasters your running in the 10s?? i would think intercepters had low numeric gears like a 3:1 or something for high speed, seems it would be hard to get a car with a 3:1 ratio to run 10s esp. stock everything but exhaust and slicks
