starter prob

So this afternoon i left to go get my check cashed. i come home to grab something. i turned my truck off ran inside and when i came back outside turned the key over to start it. it wouldnt start. so then i decided to try to roll the truck down the driveway to hopefully kickstart it. no go. i had my neighbor try to jump me off because i thought it was the battery being dead. wrong. It wont click or nothing when i turn it over. the door dinger dings. the windows wont roll up or down though. i dont understand is this the starter or the starter sillinoid or what? fusible link or what?

Need to check fuses first. Nothing bad there? Then likely it's your keyswitch. That controls the power to your accy's and if it failed, then stuff won't work.

Does radio work? Heater fan? Any other accy's that come on with key.

If re-trying the key things would work/not work, then I'd say it's the switch failing.

You can get under the hood and jump power to the soleniod(on the inner fender) and see if you get starter to spin. Won't help the situation, but at least tell you that those are good.

Then I'd start to look at key switch.

Here is what I found:
AutoZone.com | Vehicle Selection | Year

Says $18 in my area.

Hopefully that shows up. It's mounted directly on bottom of column. remove the lower panel across dash and it's readily accessible there.

I was just on my last week when I installed a remote start system. You have to tap into wiring to make it work.

Now, this is just my opinion on what you've told me. I would likely do some more checking around to make sure there isn't other wiring issues. From the detail you saying that turning the key causes intermittent problems, I'd say the switch is failing. Usually electrical parts are NON-returnable, so make sure it's the problem.

If you like, pull the switch out, and try it manually. Does it cause problems?

Here is a site that will give you the wiring diagram for your truck. Follow the link to your wiring diagram. See "vehicle wiring diagram", then go to Ford and find truck, etc. It will give you all the colors and what they do. Should be helpful.

yes my truck did the same thing every once and a while i had to hit the terminal with a hammer to get a good connection, replaced all the wires and no problems yet, also while your messing with electrical stuff put a new connector on the little wire on the top of the solonoid they are known to go bad and if you don't have something to jump the solonoid with they can leave you stranded

how do you hotwire one of these trucks with the computer? with mine you just run a hot wire to the positive terminal on the HEI dissy hit the toggle switch to turn on the fuel pumps and jump the starter solonoid if you want to get fancy run a wire to the electric choke, and to get the wheel free just turn it as hard as you can and break the steering lock, to get it in gear set the parking break, crawl under it pop out the linkage on the tranny and pull the trans lever into gear.....you think i've done this before?

Yeah thanks so much. i was outside and messing with the connection and kinda hit the terminal with a wrench and corrosion just flew off everywhere then i put it back on the battery turned the key and it sparked where it was burning that off. the terminal is old and tore up. it's the original that came factory it looks like. but i bent it in a little bit so it would get a better connection and then finally got the stupid thing to tighten.
