Ford Towing Guide Sucks!

My 2008 F-250, Supercab,XLT,LongBed,6.4L is shown in the Ford Towing Guide as being capable of towing a 15,600 lb Fith Wheel. The GCWR is 23,000 lbs., the GVWR is 10,000 lbs. The tire loading info sticker states that weight of occupants & cargo cannot exceed 2082 lbs. Rear GAWR is 6,100 lbs.

Doing the required calculations and considering pin weight (15 %/ of trailer weight), fuel and passengers (450lbs.), 5th wheel hitch (about 400lbs) that means all I can tow is about 9,100 lb. fifth wheel. How does Ford come up with 15,600 lbs.?

well, had to go out and look at mine. It says should never exceed. so if you are working against that principle of occupants and cargo, which you say is a total of 850 lbs, then take that minus the the 23, 000 lbs =22150, minus truckwt (well use mine as I know what it weight 8100 lbs= trailer wt of 14,050.

remember the not all the trailer is on the truck

But the "Tire & Loading Information" sticker on the door jamb says "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed 2082 lbs."

Trailer is not cargo, only what is in the bed of the truck/occupants.

I have been told that the pin weight of the fifth wheel is considered cargo...what is the source of your information? I have the same tires as you.

yes the pin wt is cargo...but not the whole trailer. So the amount you can pull is not the same as you can haul in the bed (payload) capacity.

Going back to your post at 09:23...you say you can pull a trailer of 14,050lbs...taking 15% of that as pin weight (2107 lbs) you are exceeding the Tire & Loading Limit.

Was just using your figures so that is why I was off. Best thing to do is to weigh your truck emtpy and then with the trailer if possible so you can get a more accurate idea.

"The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed 2082 lbs"

Isn't that per axle? or per wheel?

That's total for the vehicle. It sucks but there's a decal on the door jamb of the truck that gives you the tire and loading information. My '05 by Ford's specs. has a payload of 2710 lbs. The sticker says 2180. There's a huge thread in the '09 F-150 forum about this. Some of those guys have bought loaded up Platinum F-150 trucks only to find the door sticker says their payload is 900 lbs:

the op has two things going here. payload vs towing capacity. So that complicates the issue.

What I was trying to get him to understand was the difference. Not sure I was successful.

I think you were and good info. I was just pointing out that there can be huge differences between what Ford advertises as payload and what you actually have available depending upon options, etc. I was shocked at some of the payloads in that thread in the '09 F-150 forum.

Yea I guess I'm hung up on the payload/pin weight issue. There is no way my truck can haul a 15,600 lb fifth wheel (as advertised) if you follow the 15% to 25% allowance for pin weight which would result in pin weight of between 2,340 and 3,900 lbs. It still seems that the max fifth wheel would weigh about 9,100 lbs.

What am I missing here?

i'd put some overload or air bags and do it anyway. Just watch out for the 23,000 max.

But do weigh your truck empty to help with your calulations.

Only other thing to watch would be your rear GAWR. I don't think you'll be over but watch it anyway.
