2003 truck with about 11,000 miles on it. The steering squeals when the wheels are turned obviously. I grease the connections at the Zerk's, the squeal goes away. 2-4 weeks later, it starts again. I am using silicone grease. Am I using the wrong grease, am I just masking another problem, am I missing something? any input appreciated.
Squeals are usually a very high frequency, and need a lot of friction and movement. The noises I am more familiar hearing from the suspension are lower, more like the creaks when you put it in gear and let off the breaks slowly. If your noise is a high frequency, I would get a tube of regular grease or even a synthetic from mobil1 or the like and flush all of the old silicone grease out.
Silicone greases I've used turn to a liquid around 100degrees and you can't contain it very well once it desolidifies. your grease may be dripping out in your time frame.
It's more of a groan I guess. Almost sounds like a bad power steering pump but it comes from the suspension and stops once it's greased. I was wondering if maybe the silicone was too light for it. Thanks for the help.

On my 2005, it developed a steering squeal/groan. Turns out there was a TSB for the repair and it was covered under the 3/36 warranty. I honestly can't tell you what the dealer did to fix it, but I believe they replaced the PS pump and maybe some other parts too.
I would flush the PS fluid and refill. Takes less than a gallon of ATF and a few minutes.
Cheap insurance IMO...
At least you can narrow it down a little bit...
It's driven a lot more now than it has been. It is the original motor. I think flushing the pump is a good idea whether that's the problem or not. Thanks for that suggestion and the link to the write up.
I had this on my 06. Thought it was closer to the steering wheel. Turns out the noise was just be transferred up thru the steer.
Cause was a bad steering worm.
Been snowing here so I haven't had a chance to do anything yet. What was the sound when your gear was bad? Mine sounds kind of like a rubber on rubber squeal. Not high pitched, just like friction.

Thanks Monster-4!!!
As I would turn the steering wheel I could feel and hear more like a dry bushing or bearing.
