Hi my names Louis and i just bought my first Ford truck. Its a 1973 F-100 longwheel base with a 360.Im about to start doin some motor work and was wondering if anyone could give me some good ideas on what to do to it.I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me.
Do the basics first...oil & filter change, air filter, replace crankcase breather, check PCV valve, fuel filter, etc...
As far as modding it, check under the engine section of the forum and do a search..."intake," "carb," and so forth. I think the 360 is more a low-to-mid-range torque motor than a screamer, so you need to keep that in mind in your ultimate plan.
Thank you and I was planning on modding it.I actually got lucky tonight im only 16 and my dad reminded me of a family friend that is a master ford mechanic and hes gonna send me a list of parts to get.
Welcome aboard "Ole Green"; looking forward to seeing and hearing more about your new ride; its great to have a friend as a Master ASE mechanic. I don't know where I be without my buddies for my trucks.
I see that you've gotten the bug we all have. Just remember, engine work turns into many types of work ... exhaust being one
I would definetly do the normal maintenance stuff, wires, coil, plugs, etc.
But, I would also, remove valve covers and oil pan. Clean them up, paint them, clean the rockers while the covers are off, new gaskets, all that stuff. Clean the under side of the motor while the oil pan is off. I recommend getting the drain plugs that shoot a nice stream of oil that you never have to remove, you just unscrew it half way and is so nice.
Also, if its a 2wd truck, i highly recommend headers with new exhaust (see what happens). Bigger carbs are nice with headers, I'm still waiting to do my carb work. I personally like a manual choke vs an automatic but that's me.
Next, timing chain. I didn't NEED to do the timing chain untill I got down there and realized there was a full inch of deflection. You don't want to be on the side of the road because you jumped a tooth.
Fix any vacuum leaks you may have. Replace gaskets. When I did my valve cover I got some really nice hex cap screws to put in there, they look really nice.
Hope you have fun with it but remember that the more you do, the less you get to drive it
Thank you for the advice and most of the stuff you mentioned I already thought of but a few things I hadnt so thank you for the advice. Also as soon as he gets me the list of parts ill post it,even though im sure most of you would have a good idea of what to do anyway, but maybe it will help someone on here.I would also appreciate anymore advice anyone would give me I love learning more about cars and trucks.O and also about the manual choke I like them to lol.And I need a new exhaust as well, the previous owner I guess hurried and made a quick fix cause the connector to my muffler is a Pepsi can.
