I'm working on a project vehicle. My chassis is a e350. It has a e40d transmission. My new body and steering wheel are vintage. So I have done away with the 89 steering column. I have looked into winters art shifter which looks all manual to me. It looks like that would work.
However I see the transmission has electronics and have read post here about this.
My question is can I combine winters shifter with some type of controller or do I even need a controller. If you can help please let me know which controller or etc I need to look at for use with the winters shifter. I know nothing about transmissions. I really need some specifics. Thanks
Are you using the same engine that came with the transmission? The transmission is controlled through the PCM. Is there and OD cancel switch on the van shifter stalk or is it on the dash?
The trans is electronic and is controlled by the PCM.
What are you using for a motor, the gas motors had the trans logic within the engine PCM, the NonPSD diesels had a stand alone PCM for the trans.
The good news is there is a sensor on the side of the trans that tells the PCM what gear the shift lever is in so any cable operated shifter should work.
If your using a non computer controlled engine I'm pretty sure summit or any racing catalog sells a stand alone PCM for the E4OD.
Yes, I'm using the same 7.3 idi, It did have overdrive on the old column shifter, not sure about a od cancel switch on column or dash, i don't remember seeing one, when i dismantled the old body. I am using all the old electronics from the van- fuse box and etc. Showing my ignorance I'm googling PCM now. I remember there was one silver box under the glove compartment I had no idea what it did.
yup, just use the idi vans, trans harness and controller.the shifter you want and mount a od cancel switch wherever you want.
'89 was the introductory and worst year for the e4 made but if it works.....run 'er.
