BTW, a month after I talked to Brian, my 01 Diode locked up (Thanx Ford). Someone would be paying for the TC had I gone ahead with it at the time. Thankfully Brian gave me full credit for the VB after it has been running in superhot fluid with debris in the pan for over 100 miles.
I own a 99 7.3, 4"exhaust, chipped, with 168000 miles on it. My wife is the primary driver of the vehicle. She used to get very upset due to the fact that at least once a week, maybe more, some nice working guy would pull up next to her, tell her to shut the truck down, that it was about to blow up. She would tell them My husband said it is OK. Well, the torque converter has been very noisy since the truck was new, and I mean extremly noisy, the constant rattle. Ford called it "acceptable" and to be honest, you just get used to it. I too was told to just keep driving it. When it fails, I'll upgrade. Just my 2 cents worth. Chris
I would have to chime in here and give my experince here. I ran my stock tranny and converter until 220kish then I just changed the converter out for another oem. I am still on my original tranny and I am towing just as much as you are in your avatar. I have a 99 also and unless your planning on modding something I would not do a whole lot to it. I havent found anything I couldn't pull with it yet. the most I have had on her is gcwr 23,000
I would have to agree with Daniel. Not just because i am Daniel also. I put a new oem in early last summer to stop the rattle. I was so sick of the rattle and i only changed it because i hate rattles.. Been sweet ever since and i yank my 5th wheel all over and I fetch heaping loads of firewood .
Well if you catch it before it blow and your taking care of the tranny to begin with there is no telling how long the original will last you. i was talking with bts about this very same issue and he said it could last for a very long time now.
Thanks for all the help guys. It's more embarrassing than anything. I'm gonna look around for a good deal on a oem converter. I have to take our kubota backhoe (9000k) down Jonas' Ridge (Daniel knows where I'm talking about) in a couple of weeks, and I was a little nervous about bringing it back.
OH yeah I know exactly where that is! I rode my 954rr up 181 many time last summer and some this fall. If you have any troubles while your down this way I can help you out. I have a 25ft goose that I can tow you back on. Ha What are you doing down at jonas ridge and are you coming down through newland?
Bill was kind enough to explain and send me a diagram of what is most likely rattleing in the tc. He also recommened to check the flexplate, and if it is indeed the tc to change it.
My late 99 is making the same sounds. Just looking for more info to figure out what and why its making the noise before I tear the truck apart. I'll have to take a closer look. I'm confused, I thought I read on here that it was the early 99 that has the TC that will rattle, and tojoski has a 01 doing it to.
Did I miss read something?
