hello. i have a '82 f-150 w/ 300ci. and converted 3sp tranny. i belive that i have 3.80 gears in the posi rear. here's my question: i have to haul maybe a ton on sand. is my truck capible of doing so? if not how much? is there a way to take HD leaf springs off of a f-250 or 350 and easily bolt them to my rear? i know i might need new shocks, and the rear might be lifted. but is this possible?
thanks
You'll be OK with 1 ton of sand, or 1 ton of whatever. Adding extra springs/shocks does not increase your factory tow rating however, it only makes towing up to your tow rating safer and easier. Tow ratings are determined by the factory based on axles ratings, among other factors. A 1/2 ton rear axle can not be 'beefed up' except by increasing the number of the gear set. IE; go from a 3.80 to a 4.10. There's just no substitution for a full floating or a semi floating rear end for weight carrying capacity. Engine size, frame size, brake size, type of transmission all come into play when the factory determines tow/hauling capacities. There are alot of companies who will sell you overload springs and such that they say will increase your factory tow rating, but it just aint so. Do some research and you'll see what I'm saying is the truth.
Consider making more trips instead of overloading the box. Around here, $60 gets 5 yards of sand delivered. Makes more sense to do that then stiffen up your ride and bust up your knuckles.
I agree with ranger pat, have the sand delivered. What is a converted 3sp trans? A 3sp trans isn't designed to anything but drive around town (empty). You'll probably lose a clutch trying. Elliott
a converted 3sp. tranny has the shifter on the floor. i had a clark 4sp., and trashed it. so my brotherinlaw gave me a ford 3sp to rebuild. instead of the column shifter, i put in a hurst indy 3sp. shifter. it drives good.
i just hauled the sand, and i put little over a ton in the truck and it drove just fine.
