I have an 88 F-150 with a 5.8, I have rebuilt the motor and am in need of a cam. The motor has been bored .030, crank turned heads reworked. What is the largest cam I can run without any troubles? And what is the stock cam? Thanks
how would I go about MAF setup?, this is the first FI motor I have worked on so the computer stuff is new to me, my other trucks are 77 and 79, they are simple

There are a number of companies including Ford Motorsports that have kits out. The Ford kit would include all the parts you would need to do the conversion, the other aftermarket kits usually have pieces and you have to gather the rest of the parts from the junkyard. Do a search on the internet and you should find a ton of info.

There could be several reasons for your truck acting this way. Timing issues, Fuel issues, Distributor issues...
would a cam that is not computer compatible cause that problem?, it came with the rebuild kit, and is supposed to be computer compatible, but we got fuel, timing is on, the distributor is the old one and the truck was running before it was rebuilt.
i bought the truck to have a 4wd for the winter, drove it from august til feb, the only gaskets/seals that were good in the motor were the timing chain, heads, and front and rear seals of the oil pan. it didnt burn oil, it didnt use any, i changed it when I bought it, checked it daily and just drove it. it would spew oil out the top and suck it in at bottom. it probably didnt need rebuilt, but I figured it would be better to do it now than it quit once I was using it again.
The cam would have to be pretty radical in its timing, ramp, lift, etc... to cause that issue. A wrong cam for the firing order, which is probably not your problem could cause that also. To answer your cam question, yes it could cause those problems, but if you bought a rebuild kit for that specific year(s), it should have a compatible cam included.
I'm with paintslinga. i put this Crane cam in my 351W and it works great. It is computer comapatible and gives plenty of extra torque. No need to go to MAF with this, but it will work with MAF if you decide to go to it later.
Have you checked your timing with a timing light and with the spout connector disconnected? Are you sure you have the distributor in properly? I know it is very easy to install it 180 degrees out or even off just a tooth or more. If you install it 180 out, it will have a really hard time starting or not start at all. If it is off a tooth or more it could start fine and exhibit symptoms that you are describing.
If all of the above is already checked, maybe someone else could chime in on your running fine in neutral and backfiring and not moving in gear.
