Since when do the loafer wearing "guys" at MotorTrend know a good truck? Their opinion is worthless.
When they aren't built to last and they give 'em away like candy, yes you will see lots of new ones. Move to Ford country and you won't have those eyesores everywhere.
Highly likely. They work for less than the cost of gas!
I have owned a dodge, chevy and ford. My dodge was a 94 with 150k miles on it, tranny died in early 2009. I made that truck last by babying it. The chevy, was an 88, it lasted a good long time, 2002, but if it wasnt beat on then it would have lasted till today or later even.. And my 2 fords are still running great. 91 ford and 97 ford.
Personally, I HATE dodge. They put crappy transmissions in the dodges. No matter the year, model, anything, DODGE SUCKS. Chevy only made good trucks from 70-86. But thats just my opinion. I love the 78 and 79 chevy's. I know a guy that has a 1955 chevy that still runs awesome. So chevy was awesome back in the day. Ford.... i think ford comes out on top no matter what. I love everything about them. They drive the best, they look the best, they last the longest too. But then again, of course, every truck has it's issues and every company is known for some defect. So in the end it's a matter of opinion...
DODGE SUCKS.

my two .02 on the durability issue. Yes I'm a ford truck guy but there is a reason Ford is rank one of the highest in quality. Have you ever wondered why Ford doesn't offer a 100K/10year warranty on their vehicles. The other manufactures had to in order to regain the trust of the american auto buyer. I trust my Ford and if there is going to be a problem it will occur within the first 36K or 3 years. Anyway, JD Power ranked Ford 5th in overall quality among auto manufactures. Porsche, Acura, Mercedes Benz, Lexus and Ford!!! Believe GM got 10th and the article didn't even talk about Dodge, guess they live by the saying, If you don't have anything good to say don't say it at all.

Many makers sell a steering box mount patch that's quite popular, and those bodies are infamous for rusting.
Good trucks overall though. I have an '86 C-30 with a Century wheel lift on the back, and another 86 I'm stuffing a 93 TBI 350 in place of the trashed 305 that was in place of the trashed diesel. (It has been well used and was free.)

I'm a fan of small to mid sized pickups as well .
It's too bad about the F-100 . I like the idea of an Australian Falcon UTE " think Ranchero " with it's 6spd manual mated to the 4.0 DOHC inline 6 engine .
Light duty in scope yet a cargo box to throw a few things in the back of when needed and way better than F-150 fuel mileage for everyday use yet sporty and fun to drive . Two vehicles in one for those of us that can't afford two vehicles in the driveway.
40 years of driving Fords and now I need a no frills pickup with a modest MSRP and there's nothing in the Ford line-up that i can use. 25k for a PU is a bit much for me in see'ing i still have to fuel it , insure it ect.
I don't know about the rest of potential small truck buyers but MSRP's are getting out of my reach and all i ever wanted was an economical manual shift with airconditioning . I can't find a manual shift pickup that fully fits my needs these days and all manual shift transmissions are gone from the Ford line-up.
An under 2 liter turbo diesel engine for under the hood of the current style F-150 to aid upcoming CAFE needs won't suit my needs either.
Perhaps i will just buy a trailer hitch for the wife's car and save the money.

I think the F 100 is right in front of everybody with the current regular-cab, short-box, V-6 pickup. But I don't know what else really defines an F 100!? I don't know what else the F 100 would have been expected to be other than that truck? Unless you're talking about having that lighter duty truck with some better trim levels and options?
But the market is too small as I am finding out right now. That's why.
I am looking for a new 2012 Regular-cab, 8 ft box 4X4 in XLT trim (because that's the best you can get) with a 5.0 auto(because that's the biggest you can get) without the heavy duty suspension!
I had to go at least 6 dealers to find a regular cab pickup! All I found was the aforementioned plain jane XL's. The dealers are telling me that supercabs are getting hard to move! Everybody wants a crew cab! If I want to LOOK at a truck like I want, I have to order one!
Even then, I can't really get what I want. I would like a much higher trim level truck in that format. To me, a Harley-Davidson Trim level with the 6.2 in that configuration would suit me just fine! But by the looks of the lots and showrooms, I'm the only who feels that way.
I don't know what it is like on the rest of the continent, but in these parts, the 8' box reg cab pickup is becoming extinct! I have had one my whole life and I love them starting with my first brand new truck, a 74 F 100. Bye F 100. G.
