I was looking online into remote starters today but there are sooo many to choose from. Can anyone help me with ones they have, or had, or installed and tell me what you think...I am looking into remote start and alarm combo, 2 way with the LCD screen....thanks
have had luck with astro start. have one on my 2000 f350 and 2002 "X". DEI is also a well known company which I've used but not on a diesel. What ever brand you go with make sure!..... and I repeat make sure the company installing it knows what they are doing. been to two different vendors and either they were both still learning or parts and info is being updated quicker than normal. Also check warranty coverage and how it transfers to another dealer if you move or your orig. dealer goes out of business.
Ive got the Viper 5901 and its a great system. Cant tell you about the install, I had a viper dealer install it. It has a great range. I can start my truck from over 1 mile away.
how much was it installed if you dont mind me asking?
and thanks for the INFO mtford, my truck is longggg out of warrenty! I was going to try and install it myself...guess not now....the places that do car accessories charge an arm and a leg for little things..

Ahhhh whats a few more $$$ for the install ?? By the look at your mods, you have more in your truck than I have in my truck & 5th wheel camper.. I have a remote start in my truck, but not sure of the brand,, It was in the truck when I bought it & there's absolutely NO markings on it anywhere. But it sure is nice in the winter !!!
Kenny, I got a Crimestopper alarm and remote. I had them installed from them and they warrantied it for life as long as I owned the vehicle. They have been around a long time so no worries there. 400.00 plus tax installed. Try to go with a place thats reputable. Here yaa go http://autotruckoutfitters.com/caralarmsstarters.html

Reason: Here yaa go
That is why I want the alarm. I have thousands of dollars in my truck and would like to keep it, In my truck! The remote start is for warm up time in the winter, I have too much motor work to just start and go and am too impatient to start up and wait 5 mins or so before leaving...just spending 250$ is worth it then loosing all I have in the looks and motor work.
Viper is a territory based dealer item. Check the price out above and it "retails" for like 650. I could sell everything else when I owned my business from DEI BUT Viper! Its a good product but Python is the same without paying for the name!
Less than 300 bucks from them I would install it myself!
the astro start is also a mile range as is viper (DEI). Another thing to consider is the option to have more than one vehicle on a remote. I have both trucks on each remote. Check what is offered for shut off timer (allows you to shut of ign. and lock and leave truck running for set period of time to cool down, like a turbo timer). Types of sensors available if your getting a security system with the remote starter. My open top of road jeeps had a prox. sensor which reads movement within a perimeter in addition to a shock sensor. In my f350 I also have a knock/shock sensor in behind a taillight so it's more sensitive in the rear of bed if someone is messing around. Most companies can add several different sensors to fit your needs. Also... options like when using your remote start if you want the radio, a/c, heater, etc. on or off. Some offer remote window operation in addition to door locks.
All this being said. Again make sure the installer knows what they are doing! Most will not cut any factory wiring but will strip an area back and solder. Some shove connectors into the fuse box that spread the connectors. I had a cab fire in my 2000 f350 shut of in a building that took out the l/f door panel, dash wiring harness, DME, carpet, mat, whole l/h side for dash from radio over, shattered the windshield, headliner, etc. Repair shop said it was the remote/alarm system. Installer said it was impossible due to low watts and internal fusing . Body shop found the wires from the frt. of quad cab to tail light at end of a long bed was heavy gauge. They think it was routed poorly and shorted against 12v. Insulation was dripping off the entire length. Even though these wires where outside and under the truck makes me wonder.
