i switched my truck over to rotella syn when i got it.i was due for a oil change,10,000 miles since last change..Well i put just reagular plain jain rotella 15-40 in her because st this point in time syn cost to much,i got a 5 gal pale for 54bucks..but any way that reg rotellla stinks to high heaven when it comes out of the ccv..smell like some body slaps u in the face with used gear oil...insta head ache.....
just changed my oil last night. I was using 5-40 but wally world only had 15-40 so I just got that. The 15-40 sticks something bad! I also noticed that I have less blow by and that the truck is a little louder. When costing in overdrive I can hear the injectors or rocker arms now but before it was almost completely silent. I don't want to Hijack the thread but is that normal.
One of the things I like the most about winter is having the oustide air coming in through the heater and getting a quick whiff of my Schaeffer's 5w40 odors out of my CCV hose.

i noticed that also,my motor is alot louder..but it was cheaper so oh well...
I also run Rotella 15/40 and since my last oil change, the truck got louder, i thought something was wrong...my neighbors powerstroke is half as noisy as mine.
not trying to hyjack, but does syn smoke worse out of the ccv than dino?
Different oils smoke differently, syn or dino. The Amsoil I ran did not smoke as much as the Schaeffer's I'm running now, but my engine seems to like the Scaheffers much better.

Any. Doesn't really matter. Ford has already said that the 5w40 synthetic is good for year-round use in our PSD's. The old story about leaking seals, etc. when switching to synthetic is more like an old-wives tale at this point due to the OEM improvements in gaskets and seals. However, if you have a leak before switching, you should take care of that first so as to not lose the more expensive synthetic.
