Post Towing experiences

Hi all,

I'm the one who recently posted the question about trying to determine the GCWR of my truck and unfortunately didn't get the information I was looking for, (perhaps it doesn't exist). So I thought I'd ask a slightly different question.

I'm curious about hearing the towing experiences of those of you who have a 460 with 3.55 gears. How much weight do you typically pull or have you pulled? How does the truck handle it? Have you experiences any transmission problems in doing so? Do you live in a hilly area, etc., etc.? (I'm looking to tow about 9500 pounds with my F250.)

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

Blane

Out of the 93 Ford RV and trailer towing guide, for your F 250 w/460/3.55 axle/4x4, the max gcwr is 15,000. The max trailer weight is 9800. All this is for the reg. cab. Supercab is 9400 for trailer weight and the same gcwr. A change of gears to 4.10 only increases trailer weight by 200.Hope this is the info you need.

Blane,

We have a '95 F350, 460, E4OD, 4:10 gears and pull a way too heavy 5er. Like so many others on the road, we were suckered into purchasing the RV by trusting the salesman. 20/20 hindsight, now we're stuck with a trailer that is legally too heavy for our truck. Unfortunately we're not in s financial situation to purchase a new truck.

Anyway, our 5er is 10,800 empty and loaded ready for the road, about 12,000. The pin weight is 2,200 empty and about 2,400 loaded. Before this trailer we had a 24' TT that weighed 4,500 empty and 7,000 loaded. That trailer started the breakdown of our transmission and the 5er finished it off. We just dropped in a new E4OD with all new internals, including steel gears instead of aluminum, modifications to the lubrication system, a larger more efficient center support bearing and new bearings throughout, a mild shift kit, and a heavier duty TC. We also added a Banks TransCommand module to assist with the shifting. Without the new heavy 5er, the damage wouldn't have been as extensive.

The brakes will also wear faster and run hotter. We have burnt one set of brakes already due to the weight of the trailer. Not a fun experience, trust me. We now are forced to gear down and "creep" down the hills in order to maintain control of the rig.

All in all, this has been quite the learning the experience, it's a shame it's cost us so much money, and we're not through it yet. We are looking at purchasing an F450 once we are in a financial situation which will allow the purchase.

I pulled a trailer with my '73 F100 from Springfield Mo. to the L.A. basin with no problems whatsoever. The whole show weighed in just a little above 10,000. The powertrain was a 390 with a 4 speed. The GVW on the truck was 5,000, and it weighed 5200 empty. I wouldn't have even tried it with a juice tranny.

Web, I don't know if you use special linings or semimetallics. I've got a 460 and will tow a heavy load, so looked into special duty brake linings. The ones that were recommended for my rig are Performance Friction Z linings, cost less than $70 at AutoZone, very expensive anywhere else. For a look at the plusses and minuses of various brake pads, if you are interested, look here: http://www.shotimes.com/brakes/survey/brakes3.html
