66 F100 4x4 Starter Problem

Just starting to play around with my new truck as it has finally arrived. It has a new starter and new solenoid but it seems that the starter gear (pinon?) is not always engaging with the fly wheel. I got under the truck and removed the trans inspection plate so that I could see the fly wheel and inspect it. The teeth of the fly wheel do have some marks on them however the depth seems to be ok, comparing in on the tip of a screwdriver to another flywheel siting in my garage.

Is it possible that the previous owner put in an incorrect starter that doesn't have a long enough engaging shaft. Can this be changed? Is it possible that I just need a bigger starter gear (pinon?)? Can that be changed?

I guess I need to get underneath and watch as someone else starts the engine to see exactly what is going on but has anyone else had any other experiences like this?

thanks
jason

You detailed the problem, but you forgot something...what size is the engine?

IMO it's prolly a defective starter drive, but without knowing what engine the truck has, there's not much more anyone can tell you.

I think it might be the original 352 but I have yet to figure that out. The broker I bought it from said it was a 390 but I have been reading that is a common mistake. Any idea how I can find out if it is the original engine. I read in here somewhere that I can measure the stroke to determine if it is a 352 or a 390 with a stick through one of the spark plug holes I just haven't done that yet.

I agree with Bill, bad starter drive. And yes, you will need to check the stroke to determine if it is a 352/390. Most 352/360 turn into 390's on the day that they are sold.
