I have a 2005, King Ranch, F-350, Long Bed, 4x4, SRW & a Diablo performance tuner. 107800 miles. I've replaced both fuel filters. Sometimes when the truck is cold I have a shudder when I give it power. I can lift off the pedal or floor it and it goes away. I "think" I hear a little more turbo whine then I use to. I thought it was a tranny problem but, the dealership couldn't find anything wrong with it. I blow black smoke but, not any more than I under stand is normal with a tuner. My code scanner doesn't kick out any codes. When it comes to gas burners I can fix almost anything but, I'm new to turbo diesels. Other than that the old girl is perfect any ideas?
I have a '05 350 lariat CCLB that shutters an shakes when I run in the 41to 44 mph range for a while. After about six times to the dealer they came up with that the length of the truck and the stiffness of the frame causes that. I just try and stay above or below that speed.
It could be an injector starting to act up. Do you use a synthetic 5W40 oil? Change oil filter often w/ OEM elements? Could also be a problem developing w/ your EGR valve.
350bird, I have that exact same shudder/vibration.....really annoying. There was a thread a while back...I cant seem to find it...they mentioned that Ford was aware of this and that it was due to an imbalance in the drive shaft.
To me the main clues are the shudder when cold and the smoke. It is very hard to say for sure though - many different causes for very similar symptoms.
I would at least pull and inspect the EGR valve. If you do clean it, use carb cleaner and be careful - specific instructions can be found on this forum. Oh and use synthetic 5W40 oil if you don't already.
