Grinding when shifting into 4WD...
When driving and trying to shift into 4wd, something in my transfer case is grinding. It will make a nasty griding noise, then pop in if im going 15-45 ish. If faster, it just grinds then wont shift into 4wd. If Im going slower or stopped, then I just hear the thump of it engaging.
This problem started when my truck quit shifting into 4wd during the really cold weather this winter (Alaska). If the weather was warmer, then it would work most of the time. Then the grinding started. I replaced the shift motor (i figured it was tired or stripped out, and just not engaging fast enough) and my problem is still here.
What do you think? Need a rebuild? Can I rebuild it myself with a kit, or am I going to get raped at the shop? I am a very competent mechanic, and prefer to do things myself if I can.
Thanks for the help.
Joe
If it does need rebuilt I would think you could do it. You might be able to find rebuild instructions at motorcraftservice.com or at motivegear.com but maybe some of the transmission experts will chime in soon.
With the front hubs locked in, the case doesnt grind anymore. Others have suggested a syncro...
Where should I get the best rebuild parts? Should I rebuild the whole thing myself? or just replace the syncro's?
Thanks
Joe
