Oil Change Philosophy

Was scanning my onboard computer data while I waited from my son to drag his sleepy butt to the driveway and realized that my 2005 Explorer has an oil monitoring system. I noticed I had more than 50% remaining on my oil life (according to the computer), but had just changed the oil recently at the 3000 mile mark. Are these oil monitoring systems useful? Or does the algorithm mindlessly compute oil life remaining using the recommended mile oil change interval in the Owner's Guide?

Thanks,
Michael

Interesting question. I think some systems keep track of temp, idle time and other factors while at least one measures disolved solids in the oil. Maybe someone here has the right answer for you...........

i will guess that it goes by the odometer and is useless. I just change at 5000 mile intervals and use good oil and filter.

I prefer the old sticker on the windshield but since you asked..........

Oil Life and Oil Life Start Value

The oil life is displayed in percentages and is preset to a maximum of approximately 8,047 km (5,000 miles) or 180 days. The oil life start value is used to increase or decrease the starting point of the oil life. The value can be changed back to the maximum of approximately 8,047 km (5,000 miles) if the value was previously changed or to lower the value by 10% increments down to 30%. Each 10% reduction lowers the oil life in both mileage and the days.

For example, if the oil life start value is lowered to 50%, the maximum mileage is 4,023 km (2,500 miles) or 90 days. The oil life remains at the selected setting (50% in this example) until the driver changes the oil life start value. When the oil life (not oil life start value) is reset back to 100% following an oil change, the oil life resets to 4,023 km (2,500 miles). For configuration of the oil life and oil life start value, refer to Message Center Configuration in this section.

================================================== ==============================
Oil Life Reset

NOTE: The oil life calculation is set at a maximum of approximately 8,000 km (5,000 miles) or 180 days.

Press and release the SETUP button until the message center displays PRESS RESET AT OIL CHANGE.
Press and release the RESET button until the message center displays HOLD RESET TO CONFIRM.
Press and hold the RESET button for 2 seconds and release to reset the oil life to 100%.
Press the SETUP to exit the procedure and continue with the system check.

Oil Life Start Value

NOTE: The oil life start value is used to reset the oil life value back to the maximum of approximately 8,000 km (5,000 miles) if the value was previously changed or to lower the value from the maximum (8,000 km [5,000 miles]) in 10% increments up to 30%.

Press and release the SETUP button until the message center displays PRESS RESET AT OIL CHANGE.
Press and release the RESET button until the message center displays HOLD RESET TO CONFIRM.
Press and hold the RESET button for 2 seconds and release to reset the oil life to 100%.
Press the RESET and the SETUP buttons simultaneously for 2 seconds until the message center displays OIL LIFE XX% RESET TO ALTER.
Press the RESET button to lower the percentage by 10% (up to 30%) for each button press or return the value to 100%.
Press the SETUP to exit the procedure and continue with the system check.
