Hello everyone. I am new to this site but i see there is alot of members with alot of expriance. Well here is the deal i just purchased my very first diesel truck. 00 f250 4x4 7.3 automatic 204,000 miles.I dont know much about diesel so i joined this site for help. This is the problem i think my overdrive is not working. When i drive on the highway at 65mph my rpms are around 2500. Is that normal on a diesel? i just does not sound right. all the rest of the other gears shift fine they dont slip or anything just the overdrive does not want to turn on. on the way home last night i noticed that my overdrive button on my lever was on. It was not flashing but it was on. You know the red light that comes on the lever that says "off".Well when i hit the button to turn it back on the light would not come off. so i pulled over turned my truck off and it came off. my question to you is do you think i need a tranmission or is there maybe a sensor that i need to change so the overdrive can work. Also i was not pulling any thing. The truck did come with Edge Juice Tunner. Will that have something to do with the problem?? I need help please.
That's not normal, going 65 my rpms are around 1600-1700. The tuner shouldn't have anything to do with your tranny not going into OD. How is your fluid? Low or burnt? Sorry I can't help you more but I am sure the trans guru's will be along shortly so here is a bump for you.
i have checked the trans fluid and its good. no smell of burn. when i hit the overdrive button it does not do anything. man i hope its the lever and not my transmission.
I just had to repair mine .. a broken wire in the gearshift handle.
It was causing mine to short out and all guages went ftal and no throtle pedal.
You will need to take apart the clamshels on the steering column... 3 phillips screws on the bottom, then unscrew the tilt lever and the bottom half comes off. Put the key in the ignition and turn to run, then push the little spring loaded ball up (under the column) and pull the key cylinder out. Then just remove the upper half of the cover. You'll see the wires coming out of the shift lever. Follow the wires and there is a small connector you can unplug (you'll loose the OD off feature) to get you by until you can get this fixed, or replace the lever.
Well I did all i could do today. First i changed out my rear abs sensor and then check for cut wires on my gear shift (no cuts). but now as soon as i drive it my O/D light turns on. i will be taking it in to the ford dealer tomm. hope all goes well. Thank you all for your help. i will keep you posted on what happends.

did you check to make sure the plug was "plugged into" the wire harness? Maybe this is loose. It plugs in on the top side of the steering column on the left hand side (just follow the wire). The other thing you might check is the actual button on the end of the gear shift handle. The button and entire wire does come out. (somehow ... I dont know how.)
it sounds like you got near something ... moved a wire and changed something... I think you are on the right track.
yea I unpluged the wire fron the top of the column and pluged it again (seem pluged) but i did not know that the wire came out of the shifter. well i dropped off my truck at the dealer still wating on the codes. I hope its nothing major.
well the dealer just called me and said the code is PO783 and that i need a transmission is this correct?? they also said something about a gas pedal sensor but i did not understand him. i guess i will ask when i go p/u the truck. has any one had that code before??? po783
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like your torque converter is locking up. My truck was doing the same thing and it didn't feel like it was shifting. Overdrive light was on all the time.
Took it to Ford and they said my torque converter was locking up and that my trans would need rebuilding. The cost was right at $2100.00 but it drives great now.
That is probably a rebuilt trans in there now. Is there any chance it is still under warranty?
I would check with previous owner or contact dealer you bought it from.
