So I went to leave yesterday afternoon, and the truck would crank over but not fire. Checked for spark, and it did not seem to be getting spark at the time. So I replaced the coil, had a spare in the garage. Still didn't start, so I ended up getting a new ignition module, cap, and rotor. Now I was getting spark, but it still would not start.
Replaced the fuel filter, since I had a new one that I just had not installed yet, that didn't fix it. I can hear the fuel pump prime when I turn the key to run. I pulled all 3 relays under the hood and tested them, they all open and close. I have also tried it using the rear tank, and front tank. Both of which I filled up on Saturday.
Could the ignition switch cause the fuel pumps to prime, but not to run properly when I turn the key to start? Something with the ignition has been wrong since I got the truck, I get no power to the radio or windows with the key in the ACC position, only when the key is in the ON position.
I just had my '95 apart putting a remote start in it last week. I know there are a couple "ignition" wires as I hooked to wrong one when I added power and heater would not run after starting with remote. Had to tap into other wire and now accy's work with remote start.
I'd look into the ignition switch and the wiring to see if something is burnt. Remove the panel below the column and the wiring is right under column.
Sounds like two different problems, the No Power when the key is in ACC position is probably due to the key switch itself being broke, I had the same thing on an 88, a different switch fixed it.
The No Start could be a number of things. May want to pull codes to see what is reported. As a quick diagnostic you can try a shot of ether if it does not even try to start then it verifies it is a spark issue.
Check what the codes are to see if there are any hard faults present. It gives a reasonable place to start.
Good Luck
I had a crank no start condition that turned out to be a bad ground o the pass. fender just in front of the starter solenoid. Took it apart and cleaned it up and it was good to go.
I ran into this problem once with a chevy pickup that belongs to a friend of mine. His was cranking and not starting and we did just about everything you did. We could hear the pump priming too. Turned out his injectors needed 40 pounds of fuel pressure to work right and his pump, while priming and technically working, was only pushing 12 pounds. We changed the pump and the truck fired right up.
I ran a code reader on it, wasn't able to get any codes on it. But I did have to disconnect the battery a few times.
Didn't get much done on it, as I decided to replace the waterpump on my old FJ40 so I could drive that until I fix the ford. Ended up getting the wrong pump, hopefully I will get the correct one tomorrow. Once the FJ is fixed, I will focus on fixing the ford again.
So now it won't prime the fuel pumps when I turn to key to on, but after turning the engine over and letting it go back to on I hear the pump prime.
When it is on the rear tank, I can hear a pump in the back of the truck run. When its on the front tank, I can only hear something in the engine bay running.
