How's everyone doing? Thank you in advance for any advice/pointers. I have a 90 f250 4wd with the 302(5.0) 5 speed. I bought this thinking I was getting a good deal, and after replacing the entire brake system (lines, hoses, calipers, wheel cylinders, pads), and clutch system(master cylinder, line, slave cylinder, clutch kit, flywheel, and u-joints). I now found that 2 of the sparks plugs are broken off in the head. Lucky me
I attempted to remove one of the broken plugs by heating up the head as much as I dare, and using an ez out, which ended up in now having 2 broken off spark plugs, one with a broken ez out inside of it.
So I am going to pull the heads off and take them to a machine a shop. I am very mechanical and do all my own work, but, I have never done a head job before. I was just wondering what all is involved in doing it on these trucks. Is it hard? Are there any watchouts/hard to's? Or is it just basic mechanics. I looked at a repair manual and it sounds pretty easy. Take off the upper and lower intake manifolds, take off the valve covers and take off the heads. THe manual said I need to loosen the rocker arms and take out the push rods, but somebody else told me I wouldn't have to do this, so will I need to or not? Any advice/tips are greatly appreciate.
Sorry so long
will I have to make sure I put the push rod back into the same hole it came out of. I don't think it would matter, but like I said, this is a job I haven't done yet. I want to make sure I do everything right. I searched around for a forum describing how to do it, as the pro's on here I'm sure have found other/better ways of doing things than the manual. The only thing I really think I'll need to use the manual for will be making sure I torque the bolts in the right pattern and the right torque spec. Everything else is just a matter of unbolting and common sense.
Yes i like to put the push rods & rockers back on the same way they came out..Just keep track of everthing & you should be fine..You will need a torque wrench & follow the bolt order...Good luck..

Easy job when you take the heads off do it just like you are torgueing them down losen them in the same order and do it like 2 times make sure your wire bursh all the botls and push rods take a shoe box and mark it front and pur 5 set of 2 holes marking the upper and lower and 16 holes for the push rods use t tape on the head bolts
have fun oh and use 2 boxs drivers side and pass sides
i just did mine this weekend. make sure you get all the gaskets. also should get some help with the heads, they get heavy when your putting them back on. the gaskets will have torque specs, and the order for you.

I would soak the exhaust manifold bolts and any bolts that are rusted w/penetrating oil to help get them off.Drain the radiator and use engine oil on the head bolts when you put the heads back on and use high temp. anti-seize on the spark plugs when you put them in.
