Towing with Auto Level Control

I am installing Firestone air bags and automatic level control on my 2001 F150. I have been told (NOT in the instructions) that the automatic control should be disconnected when towing. This seems to defeat the purpose.

I guess that the reason somebody would say this is to prevent inadvertent overloading. Also possibly they are thinking of air shocks, whose mounting is not adequate for additional load support. But with a properly loaded and balanced truck/trailer set-up, it would seem that running the truck level would provide for minimal spring wear and sag, full suspension travel, proper allignment, correct headlight aim, etc.

Am I missing something?

MrBSS

PS: I also use a load distributing hitch (class IV). Usual trailer is a 2 horse Trailet. I have set up the hitch height, bar tension, etc., before installing the air bags, and would disconnect the auto control (for set-up only) if I ever had to make a significant load change.

Towing with Auto Level Control

unless the owners manual specifially says no, i would use the auto level system as that is what it is there for.

My owner's manual does not discuss automatic level control as it apparently is not available from the factory on F150's, but I'm inclined to agree with you: "that's what it's there for."

Thanks, MrBSS
