Hi, my first post to FTE. I have a 2000 F250 SD 4x4 with the 5.4L gas motor. It has less than 70K mi. on it but has developed a ticking sound which seems pretty mild. There is, however, a much more distressing noise that is more of a rattle/shudder when you rapidly back off the throttle from a 2500rpm or higher engine speed. The engine oil shows tiny metallic particles in it (cut open the oil filter) and at least 3 technicians have confirmed major engine damage - probably rod journal/bearing failure. I am trying to figure if there is any other option than having the engine R&R'd for about $5,000 for a factory or Jasper's remanufactured unit. If I could spend $1,000-2,000 having someone drop the oil pan (and possibly the crank) and mic. (maybe machine) and replace a rod bearing to give it an additional 20,000 miles or more I might opt for that at this time. Is there anyone out there with experience and ideas on this? Thanks kindly.
I think at this point you could do the poor mans rebuild, drop the pan replace all the lower end, but i really think your looking more than that if you have metal going thru the motor.
Thanks Senix. That's pretty much what I've been thinking. The bummer is I had a bad vacuum leak that was causing all kinds of rough starting and running and then finally, when we got that worked out, my mechanic noticed the knock. It pulls strong (for a 5.4) and the knock is pretty mild with the exception of the rattle/shudder described in the original post. It's just weird to have this problem at such low mileage. Andrew, the truck is in good condition for the xl work truck that it is. It's not the best towing rig for my trailer and bobcat/mini-excavator but I don't haul very often or very far so it works. If I could get a couple g's for it as is I might look for a V10 or a PSD (with higher miles) to replace it with. I'd like any input anyone has on my predicament. Ken
