Seriously, I would suggest you install a transmission temperature gauge if there is any question. It looks to me like Ford, as part of their attempt to lower their costs, is redefining what "Heavy Duty" and "Super Cooling" consist of. The only way to tell if yours is adequate for your situation is to get a temperature gauge.
OK, I guess Matt is right. Didn't realize that the SD's had trans temperature "gauges".
In case you're not familiar with what he means by "idiot gauge"; that is a gauge which does not show the read-out as it goes up or down, but merely pops into the red range at a certain point. It appears to be a gauge, but really is no more valuable than an idiot light. My F150's oil pressure and battery "gauges" are this type. Still, if it never shows "HOT" for your trans, you should be OK.
Yes i i have that idiot lite gauge......with an almost too small cooler.......i will take this a positive to replace or add a second.......your thoughts on a larger trans pan instead of or in addition to another cooler?
Dan / FT
Do you mean a third cooler? You have an in-tank trans cooler that runs serial to an aux cooler located between the rad and condenser.
The Ford cooling systems haven't been cost reduced for lower performance. Don't know where that comment came from earlier.

I think I read somewhere that there is 5 positions that the gauge will stop in. That should be enough to tell you whether the tranny is getting too hot or not, but if you want to know the exact temp, you will need to add an auxiliary gauge.
When you stated that you ave an almost too small cooler stock, are you referring to the cooler that you can see behind the license plate bracket? If so, that is the power steering fluid cooler. The tranny cooler is located between the radiator and the air conditioner cooler thingy. You have to lift up that black plastic cover and look in there to see it. To me it looks more than adequate and the radiator also cools the tranny fluid, so you have (2) coolers from the factory.
