Bigger Downpipe?

Right now i have a 3.5" downpipe that expands to 5 inch straight pipe dumping around the rear axle. I want to extend it out the back again cuz im tired of my rear shocks and axle covered in soot. Question is, will upgrading to a 4" downpipe while im doing this have any benefits. Will it sound any different than my 3.5" downpipe I have now? Thanks for the help.
