I have a 94 crew cab dually that I put a banks turbo on ,that I really like, the miles show 155k . I'm getting a growling noise from clutch or trans when taking off and also going down the road , in any gear mostly when a load is on it . It started out just doing it when backing up a slight incline but now does it all the time. The clutch engages smoothly and trans shifts good . Does any one have any ideas? Really enjoy FTE!
I assume you do not get the noise with truck stationary and trans. in neutral. I assume you also do not get the noise with all the above but the clutch pedal depressed.
That being the case I would check the drive shaft universal joints and the wheel bearings and the differential fluid.
The wife took truck and had local ford mechanic drive it he says it needs the dual mass clutch replaced 1500$ parts alone. I can do this my self , does this sound right ?
Do some shopping the first one I bought right after they appeared was dealer only 1100 bucks. The last one was from amarillo clutch and drive and was 531.00 this has been several years.
The noise is called gear rollover noise. With the SMF, you will get the noise in neutral and at idle. When I installed my 5-speed, I opted for the SMF. I over filled the transmission with a total of two gallons of ATF. There is some noise at idle, but it's really not that bad. With the DMF's being so prone to failure and so expensive, I did not want to take that risk. I can live with a little noise once in a while.
