Bronco Towing

I have searched through the old posts here and get the feeling that the bronco is not a great towing vehicle. I have a 96 Bronco with 5.8L, 3.55 rear and I am looking to tow a 71 Datsun Z with a UHaul trailer. The truck also came with the towing package but based upon what I have read, I am concerned with hauling this load 500+ miles. (over thanksgiving to boot). Also I have never towed anything before so if you have any tips (like not doing it please let me know.

I am running on Bridestones right now, will post the exact size when I get back in if necessary. (these were similarly sized to the P265/75Rx15)'s that were on there before)

1. make sure you got good brakes, and that the trailer has some kind of brake system.

2. Don't plan on setting any land speed records, allow plenty of time.

3. Since its drawing nearer to winter, make sure you got good tread all around, nothing worse than having a blow out with a loaded trailer. (you should all ways have good tires when towing anyway!)

4. I'd hesitate to tow with a "P" rated tire unless it was a Pxxx/xx/rim XL, If ya need some treads, go with a LT tire, you can always air them down later. (if they're just "P" rated, you might be exceeding the load capacity of the tires themselves)

5. A class III drop hitch or heavier would be very benifical, allows you to level the load out, and pulls alot better.

Good Luck!

Bronco Towing

I have towed cars (OK, trucks, including an EB, 250, and jeep)
around using rented trucks from Ryder, etc. and a trailer.
Invariably they would give me a box truck for the towing
rather than a pickup. I asked why and they said to tow a car
or truck, using a pickup was "too small." I got a generic impression
that the restriction had to do with safety. You may want
to talk with a local Ryder or U-Haul. You might be able
to get some generic advice for your situation. I've had
enough hairy towing experiences (none with rental trailer
setups) that I would personally hesitate to do what you
are considering, at least without testimonials from someone
I could trust fairly well. If you decide to go for it,
I would recommend always keeping the speed low, say 50
and never over 55. If you are going to do it often, consider
getting a larger, longer truck (f350, f250 crew cab,
box truck, etc.). My towing experience is somewhat limited
and so someone else with a lot of experience might have
a better feel and be able to override some of my concerns
with confidence. Good luck in any case.

Consider a tow dolly. They rent for $35-45 a day and only weigh a few hundred pounds as opposed to a car hauler trailer that might weigh 1500-3000 pounds. A dolly tows tow well with one exception, you can not back up with a dolly.
