How can I tell if I have the towing package? I have what I guess is a frame-mouted hitch with a 2" receiver and a 4-wire harness connector. Where does a tranny cooler enter the radiator at on a Ford? I have lines going in the bottom of the rad. and they head back toward the tranny. I'm assuming that's what it is. ??
Assuming that is a tow pkg., then what can I tow? I have axle code 18 (3.08 ratio?). What I'm wanting to do is tow a little subaru DL, but I don't know if it'll handle it or not, any tips??
Just a note: I love Fords!!! I've been stuck with a piece-o-$#!* chevy and wanted a good ol' reliable ford and I found it. 160k and still running strong! Thanks for any help on this towing thing.

That sounds like just the stock tranny cooling line. If you had a tow package you should have an aux cooler in line with the stock cooler. If you have a Ford tow package, you should also have a 3 or 4 row radiator (I think the stock radiator is only two rows).
Out of the Ford Towing guide, your E-150 if it has the tow package would be equipped with super engine cooling, aux. transmission cooler, wiring harness, handling package, and dual electric horns. I cannot confirm your axle ratio but if it is a 3.08, the max trailer weight is 4500 lbs.
I have the dual horns. What is the wiring harness supposed to look like? I'll take a closer look under there tomorrow and see about the aux. tranny cooler.
The tow guide does not state if a 4 pin or a 7 pin is furnished. At the rear of the van close to the license plate under the truck you will find a coupling that leads from one side of the truck to the other. This is for your tail lights. That coupling comes apart and the harness is plugged into each end. If you don't see it, it may mean that the harness was never attached as it comes with the vehicle in a box upon delivery.
Is the subaru DL an awd model? i know stuff before 95 was available with front wheel only...
If its AWD you might have to tow it on trailer (4 wheels off ground)
or risk burning up expensive stuff.
I do have the pkg. I went to get a set of tires and I asked the guy about it and he looked around and said it was the pkg (he should know since he had a F-250 himself). The subaru is just a FWD '86 or '87 I forget which, but I haven't decided which tow method to use; a full-on trailer or the other thing (forget what it's called) that just holds the front wheels. I don't have either so it depends on which I can borrow or rent easiest.
BTW, the tranny fluid has smelled a little burned since I got it, and with a 160k mi. I'm assuming the fluid is original. So, should I consider a fluid change before the trip? The tranny shifts perfectly now, but It is a 150mi trip. ?? Thanks for the input guys!
