Angry switch and bait or what?

A big box store whose name I wont say ran an add on thursday for a sale on a new MTD lawn mower. The price was 699 on sale from regular price of almost 900.00. Wife showed me the add thursday night and friday morning around 10 am I called the local store to ask about the mower options and before I could even ask the clerk said "we are sold out of the mower" I said well what about another store and the clerk said."all are sold" . I then said Lady you mean to tell me that ALL OF YOUR STORES ANYWHERE EVEN NEAR THIS COUNTY ARE SOLD OUT? She said "YES" .. I said "RIGHT" and hung up....The add said "limit one to a customer" 4 day only sale. It should say limit O per customer because I think it was a bait and switch scam but of course I cant prove it. Any ideas would help because I am thinking of never going there again. I just want to buy a mower not play con games.

go to the store and get a rain check, then when they come in you get the sale price... some stores will call you or even hold one for you when they arrive.

Technically, it might not be bait and switch unless you were to go down there, find no $700 mowers available and a pushy salesman tries to sell you something more expensive in a mower.

Anyway, you may be able to find all of the local big box stores by looking online. Get their phone numbers and call.

No offence to any big box store employees, but I've rarely been impressed while talking over the phone with the help at these places or most retail stores.

I agree they didnt bait and switch me but the ground work was there for them too. To me they just wasted my time with a sales add they could not honor and gave me no explanation....thats pretty bad for business. I rode by there today and their lot was full so I guess the add helped bring them into the store anyway. I wonder how many hundred people went there TO BUY THE MOWER only to be told "we are sold out" .......I think I will call a couple of stores tommorow and ask the manager for a rain check and when he says no maybe just give him a real stearn cussin just out of principle anyway....I had some trouble with a clerk in the same store just 2 weeks ago because she didnt understand english and may just take my money and go to lowes from now on.

who says they weren't sold out? maybe they only had one to sell? might be deceptive, but there is nothing legally wrong with it.

not to defend the big box store but in college I worked for a big box store of another type - sporting goods store. We had things like this happen all too often - big sale ad (came out every Sunday) only we no longer had the hot ticket item from the ad in stock. Problem was the corporate folks decided weeks in advance (ad printed at least 6 weeks before came out - ad decisions long before that) what would be in the ad nationwide. We could sell out of an item before the ad ran or an expected shipment might be late and not arrive before the ad ran. Whatever the cause we had the same result each time - employees cringing when we see the ad and knowing what was to come - angry customers who thought we were trying to pull a fast one. I'm not saying it is not possible for that to happen only that things are a lot more complicated in terms of ads, inventory and the decisions and time lines that go into them. my 2 cents...

Ship Boy - this is not meant as a personal attack, but I feel you really should look at it from a different angle.

You get too worked up over this Home Depot stuff. You seem to think they are out to get you, but the truth is, you're one of millions of customers, and they don't care about you. I agree that some of the issues you've posted about in the past can be frustrating, but you take it way too personally. Should they care about you? Of course. That's irrelevant though, because this is what you get with big box stores. Complaints like yours are well-known across America and any reasonable person should be well-prepared to expect this kind of treatment; if not, then stop going to Home Depot for crying out loud!

You seem to carry a sense of entitlement with this issue, as if Home Depot owes you something. While I believe that a business should respect its customers and do its best to accomodate their needs, you need to accept that it's just not that way anymore. My advice is to get over it and move on with your life!

YUP, However, it is meant to bring customers in to the store,,, they won't lie to you about it, just like the auto stealerships, they will state ,,, *1* at this price,,, and having worked for said bbs, many many moons ago, and knowing folks in advertising there, yes, they are on a schedule weeks/months ahead, the whole IDEA of advertising is to get you into the store,,,, same goes for ANY advertising, entice you into visiting the store,,,,,, ummm duh,,,
