Some insight please

hey guys, left alberta for St George Utah on Friday morning for quad trip, pulling two quads on aluminum trailer, 1750lbs, 3 adults 450lbs, luggage and tools etc 250lbs. Did a uphill pull, probably 10 mins and worked the truck hard, boost was reading 30 psi, all the way up, 65-70mph, got to the top and there was a slight decline, went to put my foot down again once levelled out and nothing!!!!!! sounded like transmission was gone, revs shot up but no power, thought it was tranny till i noticed no turbo at all!!!! after about 15 mins on nursing the accelerator it kicked back in?????? did the turbo's get too hot? any insight would be appreciated. another thing, it has regened about every 200 miles on this trip??????
TIA, Mark

don't think it was the turbos. sounds to me like it was defueling for some reason. Were you running it wide open? And then just let off completely?

don't think my foot was to the floor but once at top i did let off for maybe 3-5 minutes on decline, but if that is the case why 10-15 minutes till it kicked back in???

hmmmm so no defueling going on there. Maybe someone else will have experienced this and know what it was.

I don't know why you experienced that kind of problem. A lot of us 6.4 drivers have put our engines through much more stress at much higher temperatures and never experienced any loss of driveability.

Were you in Tow/Haul mode? Maybe you were stuck in a low gear and the transmission was confused somehow.

Was the engine running rough, like it was skipping or sputtering? When it is very humid outside my engine tries to make high boost/power but some kind of electronic limiter kicks in and the motor runs pretty poorly, very rough as if you were pinging a rev limiter.

The 200 mile interval on regen cycles is normal. Mine does it every 100 miles when I have a heavy trailer behind me. With a light load it will do it once/tank of fuel or even less.

I have zero experience with the 6.4 at significant altitudes. Maybe this could be a factor?

Your air filter good? Fuel filters?

Any smoke coming out the tailpipe?

Look in your manual for Turbo temperature warnings. There is something in there about turbo's and overheating. I don't remember exactly but a light is supposed to come on the dash, flash a number of times to tell you what condition it is reporting.

Altitude should not matter, I have had mine in the mountains of Colo/New Mexico and it ran good.

I think this was for the duramax but a guy was towing hard up hill and the truck defueled because the dpf got too hot. It cooled off and power came back. Sounds like that kind of deal.

thanks for the responses guys, just got internet service, in Henderson Nevada now, truck has run fine since, no warning lights when lost turbo, truck revved freely, didn't sound abnormal.... was probably at 5500ft above sea level when happened, no smoke, no nothing, probably got another 2500 miles before i get back home, will report once home..... cheers.
