sometimes when i'm sitting at idle or at a light I can hear a noise that sounds like water being sucked through a hose, its sporadic and doesn't seem to increase with the speed of the engine and i'm not sure if it continues while driving cause I can't hear it. I've changed the idler pulley today cause I thought it was the bearings making the noise but that's not it. doesn't do it all the time either, about half the time when i'm sitting at a light or in park i can hear it... any ideas on what this could be would be greatly appreciated, thanks
brake booster is starting to develope a leak. this will go on for quite a while, then one day, you either have a horrible vaccume leak, or you no longer have power brakes. un plug the hose out of the can, and block it off. start the truck, and see if you still have the noise.
wow... didn't even think of that, i thought it might sound like when bearings go bad also, kinda a buzzing/chattering intermittent noise, real low, not loud, just drove it for a while and it wasn't making noise til I was almost home
my 82 f150 started out like a bee hive kind of noise. I changed the alternator bearings, and same thing. my pop used to say "let it develop" so I waited, and the booster finally did it's thing. My 86 f 150 started that last fall, now it too has a new booster. bought it at advanced, don't remember, but I think it was about $80 + core.
yeah... bee hive sounds about right... damn, can't believe I didn't even think to look there, I was about to get a new alternator too cause I thought it was the bearings...lol, how involved is that job to do, something I can do in the drive I hope...
Check the smog pump pulley as well holmes, mine starting making funky noises before it froze up.
I'd agree with the brake booster idea but definitely troubleshoot it first!
he's talking about the bearings in your smog pump, to test, take a long screw driver, touch to pump, and put your ear on the other end. booster not bad to change. 2 bolts hold on master cyl, pull out as far as the lines will let you. lie on your back on driver's floor, pull small clip on pin on brake pedal rod, catch the washer and 2 plastic pieces, don't loose them, and remember where they go. pull rod out of pedel.watch how brake light switch fits onthe rod, take 4-9/16 nuts out of fire wall beside steering column. go outside, and under hood with small pry bar, and place between fire wall, and booster. pry off, gonna be real stuck, there's a gasket in there.to put back, reverse order. takes about 1 hr, unless your old like me, then takes a lot of breaks to do it. good luck
still unsure of where smog pump is... I have a stethescope so won't need the screw driver... could you point me in the direction of the smog pump... is it deleteable or do I need it? no emissions testing here so If I could just dump it it would be great
don't know what engine you have, but they are all usually on the pass side, front of engine, near top. has large hoses comeing out, going to cat, or to A.I.R.tubes. driven by pully, is a part of your emissions system usually above alternator. you've seen it a million times, just didn't pay any attention to it.
